Three Troubies earn Optimist All-Star selections

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – St. Francis seniors Kelsey Magley, Jacqueline Smith and Lily Zeff each earned spots on the Large School South squad at the 2023 Sacramento Breakfast Optimist All-Stars volleyball match, the organizers announced this weekend.

The Optimist All-Star match is an area tradition that dates back to 1983, with seniors from throughout the Sacramento area selected to North and South teams for both small and large schools. The Troubadours are designated as a "large school," presumably due to their Division I status in Sac-Joaquin Section play.

The matches take place on December 2 at Capital Christian. The Small School match starts at 11 a.m., with the Large School tilt scheduled for 1 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for seniors, $5 for students and $3 for kids under 12. All proceeds go to the Sacramento Breakfast Optimist Club and their educational programs.

Magley, Smith and Zeff were among the five first-team All-Delta League selections this fall, along with Lana Ezeani and Natalie Sandoval. Together, they led a squad that went 25-9 and advanced to the SJS second round in head coach Alynn Wright's swan-song season. Magley engineered an offense that hit .209 overall and had seven players average at least 1.3 kills per set. Zeff pounded out a team-high 238 kills and hit .439. Smith collected 420 digs for the ninth best season total since MaxPreps launched in 2004. (Note: no stats were compiled during the Stockton Classic on October 7.)

Joining the three Troubies on the South squad are players from Oak Ridge (Elle Weaver, Kate Fagundes, Kali Larson, Jess Ortiz), Folsom (Kelly Wong, Addie Kannegeisser), Vacaville (Ashley Chiong), Vanden (Anaya Thrower), Bradshaw Christian (Stella Watson), Pleasant Grove (Malia Tanksley) and Christian Brothers (Ella Constancio). Devin Elmore (Folsom), Taylor Ferdinandsen (Vacaville) and Lauren Charles (PG) serve as coaches, with the Granite Bay tandem of Prima Glorioso and Emily Taylor will mentor the North team.
