SF volleyball honors seniors, legendary coach in win over CO

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Outside hitter Lana Ezeani knocked down a match-high 16 kills, middle blocker Lily Zeff added eight kills and a .700 hitting average, while setter Kelsey Magley led the offense to a .329 team efficiency as St. Francis swept Cosumnes Oaks in three sets, 25-6, 25-13, 25-17, in a Delta League girls' volleyball regular-season finale Thursday night.

SF finishes the regular season with a 24-8 overall record and an 11-1 mark in its final year before departing for the Sierra Foothill League as a result of the Sac-Joaquin Section realignment process. The Troubies will learn their seeding and pairing in the SJS Division I tourney on Friday afternoon.

However, the main storyline of the evening belonged to the program's eight seniors – Ezeani, Magley, Zeff, Veronica Datwyler, Caroline Foraker, Amanda Silber, Jacqueline Smith and Mila Stojakovic – plus legendary head coach Alynn Wright. Furthermore, the Troubadours were officially awarded the Delta League banner after the win, the 24th league title in school history. Finally, the athletics department made commemorative T-shirts for the players, coaches and alumni.

In honor of Wright's retirement, she was included at the end of the usual Senior Night ceremony, and even surprised by an appearance by Steve Da Prato, a multiple Hall of Famer in his own right, who coached the Troubie mentor during her formative days at Justin-Siena High School. The SF seniors also had a "sign-off" poster made in their honor, complete with a spot for each to put her hand print. The team created a spot on that poster for Coach Wright as well.

As for the match itself, Ezeani committed only five errors on 32 swings for a .344 clip. Zeff, who hit 11-0-12 just two nights earlier against Sheldon, posted an 8-1-10 mark on Thursday, with the lone miscue coming as a result of a block in an otherwise dominating first set for both of SF's leading hitters. Magley and junior Nika Jafari each had three aces to lead from the service line, while Smith and Magley logged dig totals of 13 and 10, respectively.

The Troubies scored 13 unanswered points to start the match, with Ezeani accounting for four kills and Magley serving up two aces in that stretch. That lead stretched to 21-2 and resulted in the 25-6 win, with Zeff scoring kills on each of the 21st through 24th points.

CO responded with a 4-1 lead to the second and managed to stay within an 11-8 margin after back-to-back kills by senior Ava Hermann. Zeff then responded with a pair of kills in initial five-point Troubie outburst, then Ezeani banged out five kills in the final seven Troubie points in the frame to extend her team's match lead to 2-0.

The Wolfpack again came out strong in the third, with Meigan Banks posting a block, a kill and an ace in her team's 9-6 start. Ezeani had two kills and teamed with Silber on a block to lead SF in that opening skirmish, then CO allowed its host to reclaim a 10-9 lead on four straight unforced errors. At this point, freshman Hailey Sutton stepped in to lead the Troubies for the home stretch. She had six kills on nine total attempts, including three straight as part of an 11-1 run. Sutton also scored something of an "accidental kill" when she fielded a serve so long that it sneaked over the net into open CO court to make it 19-11. Ezeani then tallied three more kills with Sutton supplying the match-winner at the end.

The varsity sweep followed two dominating wins by the Troubie frosh and junior varsity, each of which played in season finales. The frosh served up 17 aces, including six by Olivia Wedding and five from Gianna Flesoras, to claim a 25-6, 25-12 win over the Wolfpack. The SF freshies finish their season at 26-1 and 12-0 in league.

The junior varsity followed with a 25-8, 25-16 sweep over CO. Junior Copeland Williams, who later emceed the ceremony for the seniors and Coach Wright, finished with a team-leading seven kills. Freshman Sophia Palmeri, whose older sister Gabriella was among the throng of alums on hand to honor their coach, had four kills and teamed with Mercy Collier on a block that capped a 13-0 run in the first. The Troubie jayvees wrap their season at 31-1 overall and 12-0 in the Delta League.

Playoff pairings and match times will first appear on the section website (cifsjs.org) by way of MaxPreps.com on Friday.
