Troubies sweep Sheldon in Delta League road action

ELK GROVE, Calif. – Junior Sophia Van Ness posted team highs of nine kills and three service aces to lead St. Francis to a 25-14, 25-7, 25-14 sweep of Sheldon in the varsity finale of a Delta League girls' volleyball tripleheader Thursday night.

The Troubadours improve to 16-5 for the year and 5-0 in league play.

St. Francis' frosh and junior varsity squads also won in dominating fashion, with the younger Troubies claiming a 25-4, 25-0 win in the opener, with JV following with a 25-7, 25-13 sweep of its own. Claire Strange served all 25 points of that frosh shutout in the second set.

Impressively, Van Ness contributed her nine kills in 23 total swings despite appearing in just two sets. Her three aces tied Veronica Datwyler in that category. Meanwhile, senior libero Jacqueline Smith paced the floor defense with 14 digs, while senior setter Kelsey Magley ran the SF offense to a .227 team hitting average while chipping in six digs and a team-best four blocks (three solos, one assist) on defense.

The St. Francis junior varsity and frosh teams remain undefeated at 15-0 and 14-0, respectively. The jayvees head to their version of the 15th Stockton Classic at Bear Creek on Saturday, just one week after claiming the title at Oak Ridge's Christine Craft Memorial Tournament. The Troubies will open the tourney against Monte Vista at 10 a.m., then take on Monte Vista at 11 a.m. Teams will then be assigned to brackets in the afternoon. The SF varsity and frosh squads are idle until Tuesday's Delta League visit to Cosumnes Oaks.
