STOCKTON, Calif. – St. Francis fell in split sets, 25-23, 21-25, 15-9, to San Ramon Valley to finish sixth in a tough field at the 15th-annual Stockton Classic varsity girls' volleyball tournament at Bear Creek High School Saturday.
The Troubadours move to 21-7 for the season.
St. Francis split its pool play matches, falling to St. Mary's in straight sets, 25-21, 25-22; before sweeping Vanden, 25-19, 25-15. The Troubies were initially slated to face Redwood, but instead paired off with the Vikings when Redwood withdrew from the tourney.
SF then opened bracket play with a 25-20, 27-25 sweep of Amador Valley, a meeting not without its share of excitement: The Troubies fell into a 21-9 hole before coming back to take the first set. Then in the second set, SF faced a 24-16 deficit – octuple set point – before rallying all the way back to a 27-25 win.
No individual statistics were kept at the tournament.
SRV (18-4) and Amador Valley (18-6) each advanced to last year's North Coast Section semifinals, with the Dons moving on to the title match. Vanden currently shares the lead atop the Monticello Empire League standings with Vacaville. St. Mary's (23-1), which St. Francis beat in last year's Sac-Joaquin Section semifinal round, holds the No. 1 rank in the section by MaxPreps.
The Stockton Classic championship final was a rematch of last year's Central Coast Section Open Division title match, with Archbishop Mitty sweeping Saint Francis (Mountain View), 25-22, 27-25. Saturday's tourney is the last of four Stockton Classic tournaments, held at Bear Creek, Edison, Franklin, Linden and Tokay high schools.
All three St. Francis teams resume action in a return home on Tuesday, hosting Pleasant Grove for continued Delta League play. Tuesday's match is Camp Reunion Night for all players who participated in the SF summer camps.
