SACRAMENTO, Calif. – St. Francis snared the No. 6 seed and will host No. 11 Inderkum in the first round of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I girls' volleyball tournament, the governing body announced Friday afternoon. The match will take place at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at St. Francis.
The Troubadours (24-8) won the Delta League title to earn one of the league's five automatic berths into the CIF-SJS postseason. The Tigers (23-16) finished third in the Capital Valley Conference to pick up that league's third AQ. Oddly, this is the first time St. Francis has met Inderkum in the playoffs, and it marks the first time SF has drawn the No. 6 seed.
Senior setter Kelsey Magley quarterbacks an SF offense that has at least 100 kills from four different players: middle blocker Lily Zeff (219), plus outside hitters Lana Ezeani (152), Sophia Van Ness (108) and Natalie Sandoval (105). Zeff also owns a whopping .442 hitting average, having committed just 46 errors in 391 swings.
Besides her setting chores, Magley leads the Troubies with 70 service aces while ranking second on the team in digs (227) behind libero Jacqueline Smith's 384. (Note: no stats were compiled during the Stockton Classic on October 7.)
For Inderkum, Cyana Mulitalo leads the attack with 193 kills, or 2.35 per set, while Zoe Nguyen has another 179 kills and a team-leading .205 average. Inderkum overcame a slow start, improving from a 3-9 August to go 20-7 the rest of the way.
St. Francis seeks its 14th overall SJS title and its fourth in the Div. I bracket, having won championships in 1991, 1992, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2011, 2012 and 2019. All of these crowns have come under the watch of head coach Alynn Wright, who announced that she will retire after 35 years at the SF helm.
The full Division bracket is available at the section website at https://www.cifsjs.org/volleyball-d1-bracket. Tickets are sold only via GoFan (https://gofan.co/app/school/CIFSJS), with the individual events going live on the section and St. Francis channels in the days leading up to the contest.
