Troubies defend final Delta League title

Troubies defend final Delta League title

ROCKLIN, Calif. – Freshman Ava Tompkins won the frosh-soph two-mile race in her season debut while senior Grace Dunham led five Troubies in the top 15, as St. Francis cross country successfully defended its team title at the Delta League championships, hosted at Jessup University Saturday.

The Troubadours' varsity scored 35 points, with Pleasant Grove (54), Davis (76) and Franklin (97). The win secured the program's 24th overall league title and the sixth consecutive.

Dunham crossed the finish line in 18 minutes, 23.2 seconds, outkicking Sheldon's Alana Farve (18:29.7) during the last quarter mile. Fellow SF senior Ryann Strawn came through in fourth place at 19:04.4, with freshman Sunny Schranz crossing in ninth (19:37.0). In 11th place was senior Kayla Towne (19:43.9), making her return after more than a month-long absence due to injury. Finally, senior Pamela Vargas shut the door in 15th (19:51.3), with Amelia Bell and Mykaela Le displacing in 25th (20:56.2) and 27th (21:03.3), respectively.

Dunham, Strawn, Schranz and Towne each earned all-league patches for finishing among the overall top 12.

The varsity team win followed a frosh-soph race that featured Tompkins and Mia Hollar finishing first (12:20.6) and third (12:30.6), respectively. While Hollar has been a mainstay atop the Troubie scoring throughout the season, Tompkins had been sidelined for the entire regular season, only to respond with a win in her first race.

SF finished third in the frosh-soph team scoring with 72 points, trailing Sheldon (62) and Davis (33). Lucia Hash finished 15th (13:14.6), Kalaya Moore took 23rd (13:44.4), with Chloe Harrison rounding out the scoring finishes in 30th (14:23.3). Lucy Loverich (36th) and Milena Bonnici (38th) had the two displacing finishes for the Troubies.

The Delta League championship also served as a Senior Day celebration for 12 graduates-to-be: Bell, Dunham, Strawn, Towne, Vargas, Tatum Brown, Emma Dobson, Elizabeth Gibbons, Daniela Lopez, Adeline McKrell, Chloe Rhodes-Nguyen and Kelsey Sutch.

St. Francis returns to action in exactly one week, competing at the Sac-Joaquin Sub-Section meet at the Calaveras County Fairgrounds in Angels Camp, otherwise known as Frogtown. Race times for the Troubies are 12:40 (varsity), 2:20 (JV) and 2:55 (frosh-soph).
