Schranz, Dunham lead SF at league center meet

RIO LINDA, Calif. – Freshman Sunny Schranz finished third in the girls' frosh-soph 1.92-mile race then senior Grace Dunham placed fifth in the varsity 3-mile, leading St. Francis in those respective events at the Delta League Cross Country Center Meet, held at Cherry Island Soccer Complex Wednesday.

Both Troubadour teams finished fourth in the meet. The varsity totaled 66 points, trailing a tight pack led by Franklin (54), Davis (55) and Pleasant Grove (57). The frosh-soph amassed 86 points, just four behind third-place PG.

Each SF squad ran without key runners. The frosh-soph was missing Mia Hollar, the team's No. 2 runner at the Oakmont Invitational and the top Troubie in her race at the Woodbridge Classic. The varsity had seniors Kayla Towne and Kelsey Sutch on the sidelines, both of whom consistently finish among the team scorers.

Dunham crossed the finish line in 18 minutes, 38.5 seconds for fourth place. Fellow senior Ryann Strawn was close behidn in sixth at 19:01.1 while Emma Dobson gave SF another sub-20 runner in 12th place at 19:27.8. Pamela Vargas and Amelia Bell rounded out the scoring in 19th and 25th places, respectively.

Schranz went 11:41.9 in the 1.92-mile course, a few steps behind the showdown between PG's Ava Urias (11:24.9) and Elk Grove's Gianna Mansouri (11:25.8) but well ahead of Sheldon's Andisha Zahir (12:02.3). Sophomore Jordan Brace placed 14th and Morgane Bertran followed in 20th, with Lucia Hash (23rd) and Jamisen Black (26th) completing the Troubie team score.

The Delta League center meet, hosted jointly by Jesuit and St. Francis, serves as the only meet prior to the championship that contains only the seven member schools. It also stands as a rare midweek event for cross country, which usually competes on Saturdays.

St. Francis returns to action at Bella Vista's Tom Laythe Invitational. The meet, named in memory of the longtime distance mentor at SF, El Camino and Bella Vista, takes place on the same Willow Hills Reservoir course that hosts the Sac-Joaquin Section championship in November.
