Benavidez repeats USAWP academic plaudit

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Junior center and center-defender Abigail Benavidez repeated her USA Water Polo Academic All-America for the 2022-23 school year, as the national organization rolled out its honor roll this week. The list appears on the USAWP website and will appear in Skip Shot magazine.

To qualify for the award, a student-athlete must compile a cumulative grade-point average of 3.50 or better (on a 4.0 scale) during the relevant school year, and hold current USAWP Gold athlete status. A total of 1,678 student-athletes hit these two criteria for 2022-23, up from 1,522 the previous year.

Known better as "Ash," Benavidez leads the Troubadours with 53 goals and 53 steals, while adding 23 assists for a team ranked eighth in the Sac-Joaquin Section by MaxPreps.com. She has six hat tricks on the season, including a season-best six against Strathmore and five against Turlock during the Western States Tournament in Modesto.

St. Francis was awarded the No. 4 seed in the SJS Division II tournament, and will host West Park for a first-round game on Tuesday. Game time is 7 p.m. at American River College.
