Foster scores triple hat trick in league opener

ELK GROVE, Calif. – Senior Maren Foster amassed career highs of nine goals and three assists to lead St. Francis to a 25-0 shutout over Franklin in Delta League girls' water polo action at Wackford Aquatics Center Tuesday.

The Troubadours improve to 8-5 overall and open league play at 1-0.

Normally a reserve, Foster entered the contest with three career varsity goals in 14 games throughout a career largely beset by injury and illness. She netted two goals in the second, three in the third, then four in the finale. Meanwhile, junior Addison Hutchcraft added another career best of five goals, four of which came in the second quarter.

Piper Brostrom chipped in another hat trick, with Abigail Benavidez, Havana Sperber, Reese Hughes and Lydia Vlahos hitting two apiece. Benavidez, Brostrom and Hughes also tallied four assists, one behind team leader and goalie Sophia Santsche-Chavez.

The shutout is the first by the Troubadours since blanking Dixon at the 2022 Julian Szmidt Memorial Tournament almost a year ago. The 25 goals represents the highest total in almost exactly four years: SF beat Franklin at Wackford by a 29-2 final back on October 8, 2019.

St. Francis returns to action on Thursday for the "Holy Water" rivalry game against Christian Brothers. Game times are 5 p.m. for junior varsity, 6 p.m. for varsity at Sac City College's Hoos Pool.
