Holy Water rivalry game goes to St. Francis

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Junior goalkeeper Sophia Santsche-Chavez posted 15 saves while junior Miranda Ferguson poured in five goals and assisted on two others, as St. Francis topped Christian Brothers, 9-5, in the annual "Holy Water" girls' water polo rivalry game held at Sacramento City College's Hoos Pool Thursday.

The Troubadours improve to 9-5 for the season.

Senior Ashlyn Brock added two goals, while Abigail Benavidez and Piper Brostrom each netted one. Brock got the Troubies out to a 2-1 lead in the first quarter, then Ferguson extended the margin to 3-1 with 1:09 left in the opener. Ferguson later kept SF ahead by a 4-2 edge with her goal to end the first half.

Brock won the opening sprint of the third, setting up a goal for Benavidez to bump that lead to 5-2, then Ferguson completed her hat trick at the 5:15 mark to stretch the Troubie lead to 6-2. The third frame ended with a Brostrom goal at the buzzer, making it 7-3, then Ferguson hit a 6-on-5 goal and a natural goal in the fourth to keep SF in front.

In the meantime, Santsche-Chavez notched two saves in the first quarter before exploding for seven in the second. Thursday marked her 11th game of the year with double-digit blocks, and her fourth contest with 15 or more.

The SF junior varsity fell by an 11-5 in the opening game of Thursday's doubleheader. Sara Ellis and Frannie Wells each scored twice, Ava Jack accounted for the fifth goal, and Jayel Miller notched seven saves in front of the Troubie cage.

The Troubie varsity returns to action on Tuesday in a doubleheader at Del Oro. In the interim, the jayvees head to Napa for the Vintage JV Crusher Classic on Friday and Saturday.
