Hughes lifts Troubies past Rio in overtime

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Senior Reese Hughes scored a career-high four goals, including the go-ahead in overtime, as St. Francis pulled off an 11-10 road win at Rio Americano in the varsity end of a girls' prep water polo game Tuesday night.

The Troubadours win their fourth straight game to improve to 14-7 for the year.

Senior Ashlyn Brock added a hat trick and three assists while junior Miranda Ferguson chipped in two goals and two assists before the halftime break, at which SF led by a 7-4 margin. Junior goalkeeper Sophia Santsche-Chavez tallied eight saves in the first half, six in the second, then a whopping six more in the extra frames for 20 total.

Hughes, who had a four-assist game at Franklin earlier in 2023, had never scored more than two goals in any contest prior to Tuesday night. In fact, she had just 15 career goals in 35 previous contests.

Oddly, this is St. Francis' second overtime win of the 2023 season, and both took place at Rio's pool. The first was a 4-3 sudden victory against Ponderosa at the Rio site of the Granite Bay Grizzy Classic on September 30.

The Troubies' junior varsity did not fare as well as the varsity, falling to the Raiders by a 13-3 final in Tuesday's leadoff game. No individual statistics are available from that contest.

St. Francis varsity returns to action on Friday and Saturday at the Julian Szmidt Memorial Tournament at Napa Valley College. The Troubies open with Clovis East at 8:55 a.m, then face Dublin at 2:25 p.m., with Saturday's slate dependent on Friday's pool play standings.
