Troubies close regular season against section power

CARMICHAEL, Calif. – Junior Abigail Benavidez scored a hat trick while Ashlyn Brock added a goal, three assists and three steals, but St. Francis could not keep pace with area powerhouse Davis, ultimately falling by a 17-5 final in the Delta League girls' water polo regular-season finale Wednesday.

The Troubadours move to 18-10 for the season, and 1-1 in league. The Blue Devils improve to 19-8 overall, and win the league with a 2-0 mark. The two programs were ranked No. 8 and No. 2, respectively, in the Sac-Joaquin Section by the website MaxPreps.com.

Benavidez scored on a five-meter penalty shot early in the first quarter, on a two-meter strike with two minutes before the halftime break, then again on a 6-on-5 opportunity in the fourth. Brock assisted two of Benavidez' goals, and set up Lydia Vlahos for a long bomb at the 3:25 mark in the third.

Unfortunately for SF, Davis went on an 8-1 rampage after Benavidez' trip to the five-meter stripe to Kyla Cutler's power play with 3:09 in the second. Cutler finished with a hat trick of her own, one behind senior Leila Meraz for the scoring lead. The Blue Devils led 9-3 at the halftime break, then poured in seven more goals in the third to pull away to the victory.

The junior varsity teams squared off for the nightcap in what was an overall quadrupleheader with Jesuit and Davis, with Sara Ellis scoring three goals with three assists in a 9-7 Blue Devil win.

Davis pulled ahead to a 6-2 lead after back-to-back goals from Mia Leyson to start the half. Savannah Hamilton scored on two second-chance putback goals to cut the deficit to 7-5 entering the fourth, then Ellis scored on a counterattack and a two-meter chance to equalize at 7-7 with 3:56 left in the game. Still, Leyson answered with the go-ahead after the next restart, finishing on a 2-on-1 counterattack with 3:18 remaining.

Ellis and Hamilton each had shots halted by DSHS goalie Gabriela Chehrezad, keeping the Blue Devils up by one. Rose Haag drew an exclusion to give SF an extra-man opportunity, and head coach Kate Green-Jones called a 30-second timeout to set up a power play. Stepping up for Davis was Olivia Inderblitzen, who blocked a Frannie Wells shot.

Troubie goalie Jayel Miller pounced on a steal in the final minute, but Davis restole the ball and later drew an exclusion. The Blue Devils converted the 6-on-5 for an insurance goal with 0:13 remaining.

Wednesday's game closed the season for the jayvees, and wrapped up the regular season for the varsity season. All teams will now await the Sac-Joaquin Section tournament pairings and seedings, which will be announced on Thursday afternoon.
