Brock, Brostrom hit career highs in dominating win

ROSEVILLE, Calif. – Junior Ashlyn Brock scored a career-high eight goals while goalkeeper Sophia Santsche-Chavez posted 13 saves against the single goal, as St. Francis rolled past Woodcreek, 15-1, in the varsity end of a girls' prep water polo doubleheader at Roseville Aquatic Center Tuesday night.

The Troubadours improve to 15-1 for the season. The Timberwolves, last year's Sac-Joaquin Section Division II and NorCal Division III champions, drop to 0-7 overall.

Brock scored one goal in the first quarter, four in the second to extend St. Francis' halftime lead to 8-1, a sixth in the third and two tallies in the fourth. This is her third career varsity hat trick, following three at St. Mary's back on September 7, and a five-goal game at Bella Vista last season. In fact, Brock entered the contest with 16 goals in her previous 24 varsity appearances.

Abigail Benavidez and Miranda Ferguson each added two goals, with Havana Sperber and Piper Brostrom chipping in once apiece. Brostrom enjoyed a personal high of her own: six assists, doubling her previous best of three from last year's meeting at Bella Vista. Benavidez also posted three steals, just one behind teammate Lydia Vlahos for the team lead, and drew a pair of exclusions.

Meanwhile, Santsche-Chavez continues her tremendous start to the 2023 season: she now has 50 saves with just 16 goals allowed for .758 average. She also notched three assists in Tuesday's win.

Preceding the varsity win was an 8-0 shutout by the Troubie junior varsity squad, which improved to 3-6 despite the absence of leading scorer Sara Ellis. Frannie Wells poured in four goals while Ava Jack and Charlotte Krause each netted two. Jayel Miller posted 14 saves en route to her first shutout win.

St. Francis varsity returns to Roseville Aquatic Center for the first of two weekend tournaments, taking on a tough field at the NorCal Invitational, also hosted by Woodcreek. The JV team is idle until October 2, during the program's doubleheader at Granite Bay.
