Troubies split first day at Szmidt Memorial tourney

NAPA, Calif. – Junior Piper Brostrom scored six goals while junior goalkeeper Sophia Santsche-Chavez totaled 22 saves as St. Francis split its Friday action at the Julian Szmidt Memorial girls' water polo tournament at Napa Valley College. The Troubadours opened with a 12-6 loss to Clovis East, then finished the day with a 14-1 drubbing of Dublin in the nightcap.

SFHS moves to 15-8 for the year, and will take on Rio Americano to open Saturday's Gold bracket.

Most of Brostrom's scoring came in the Dublin game, and more specifically, the first quarter. She poured in five goals as part of a nine-goal Troubie onslaught in that frame. Overall, junior Miranda Ferguson added three goals and two assists, junior Abigail Benavidez and Frannie Wells each chipped in two more goals, while senior Ashlyn Brock led SF with five assists.

Benavidez had two fourth-quarter goals to pace the Troubies in the opener with Clovis East. Brostrom, Ferguson and Havana Sperber also scored once each.

The Szmidt tourney is held in memory of the longtime Vintage High and Napa Valley Water Polo Club coach, who passed away in October 2011. This year's edition features 17 teams, mostly from the Sac-Joaquin Section and North Coast Section.

Saturday's SF-Rio game takes place at 10:45 a.m. on Saturday. The winner will take on the victor of the Marin Catholic-McClatchy game for the tournament's fifth-place game at 1:30 p.m. The seventh-place game then follows at 2:25 p.m. All games are at Napa Valley College.
