Golf Wins Delta League Center by 34 Strokes, Captures League Title

DAVIS, Calif. – The St. Francis golf team won the third Delta League Center match to complete the regular season undefeated and win the Delta League title. It is the fourth consecutive title for the program and 17th in school history.

"We had a very windy day with gusts up to 18 miles per hour and the greens were airyated so I knew the scores would be high," said Head Coach Bert Jones. "But our scores were lower than I thought so they did really well."

St. Francis shot a 406 team score to defeat Pleasant Grove by 34 strokes in the team scoring. The win completed an undefeated season with a perfect dual match mark and captured first at all three Center matches. Overall, the Troubies have won eight consecutive Center matches.

"It feels amazing," said senior Olivia Alcoran. "To win the Delta League Championship all for years is amazing."

The Troubadours had all six golfers post 85 for better led by senior Patricia Sweeney, who tied for medalist honors with a three-over and season-best 75. She tied with Sadia Sadiq of Pleasant Grove.

"When you look at the last four years and what she has done is just remarkable," said Jones.

Sweeney had four birdies on the day to shoot 36-39 and earn All-Delta League honors for the fourth time.

"It was one of those days where you score different than you play," said Sweeney. "If you walk thru my scorecard it was kinda scary. But overall I was able to pull it together and had a good score."

Alcoran was even par on the par threes and had a birdie on the ninth hole to make the turn at 41. She carded a 40 on the back nine despite back-to-back doubles on the 10th and 11th holes. She was even par over the final six holes with a bogey on the 16th followed by a birdie on the 17th to shoot 81. It was good for fourth overall in the field and clinch her fourth consecutive all-league honor.

"Olivia got off to a rough start but she recovered nicely," said Jones. "It goes to show that both Patricia and Olivia are mentally tough."

Junior Ceci Fletcher posted an 82, recording a 45 on the front but rebounded with a one-over par 37 on the back. Nashla Aguero and Madelene Lee both had rounds of 84 with Lee posting a career-best by six strokes for 18 holes. Aguero clinched her first all-league honor. Haanya Niazi posted an 85 for the team.

"Not only was her score excellent but her scores have improved all season," said Jones of Lee. "Her overall improvement has been really impressive."

St. Francis earned a postseason berth with the league title and will tee it up next week in the first week of the postseason with the Division I sectionals at Elkhorn Golf Course in Stockton.

"They have the confidence and they have the skills," said Jones. "I am expecting a really good finish at the sectionals."
