Shea shuts down Rams in road softball tilt

STOCKTON, Calif. – Senior Kiley Shea scattered three hits and struck out 12 Ram batters against no walks while Francesca Guerrera, Alexis McFarland and Reese Lewis each collected two hits, leading St. Francis to a 7-1 win over St. Mary's in non-league prep softball action at Arnaiz Stadium Wednesday night.

The Troubadours improve to 5-1 for the season.

Shea threw just 89 pitches with 66 for strikes. She retired 10 straight batters before giving up a harmless single by Maya Garcia in the fourth, and flirted with her first shutout win of the year until catcher Matea Muraoka spoiled that bid with a solo homer to lead off the seventh. Shea then responded by fanning the next three batters in order, firing eight straight strikes to finish.

Guerrera, Lewis and Kasey McAtee each doubled in the contest. Lewis drove in three runs, with Guerrera plating two from the leadoff spot. Guerrera's two-bagger closed out a five-run second-inning rally that began with consecutive hits from Alex Garcia, Isabella Barge, McFarland and Lewis, followed by a walk and sacrifice fly from McAtee and Jaeya Leavitt, respectively.

Lewis' RBI double in the fifth and sacrifice fly in the seventh extended the SF lead to seven before Muraoka finally put the Rams on the board in the bottom half of the final frame.

Oddly, Guerrera's 2-for-4 day actually lowered her season batting average. The future Maine Black Bear is now 12-for-23 for the year for a .522/.538/.695 slash line. Furthermore, the Troubies as a team have hit 74-for-185 (.400) with a team OPS of .984. Meanwhile, Shea dropped her season ERA to 1.46 with 37 strikeouts against only four walks.

St. Francis varsity takes more than a week off from competition, returning to action for a March 23 round robin at Vintage with Benicia. The Troubies take on the Panthers at 1 p.m. on that day, then face the host Crushers at 3 p.m. In the interim, SF junior varsity heads to Rosemont on Monday before hosting Del Campo on Tuesday.
