LOOMIS, Calif. – Senior third baseman Alex Garcia hit 2-for-3 with a double and two runs batted in while shortstop Francesca Guerrera and left fielder Kylee Garrett each went 2-for-4 with two RBI, helping St. Francis to an early start in an 8-5 win over Del Oro in non-league softball action Monday afternoon.
The Troubadours even their season record to 1-1.
St. Francis scored four runs in the first inning then another three in the second to craft a 7-0 lead in support of senior pitcher Kiley Shea, who allowed six hits and struck out five.
Garcia's run came as part of the first-frame rally. With Alexis McFarland and Claire Krotine each reaching on errors to start the contest, Guerrera laced an RBI single to put runners at the corners for Garcia, who drive a 1-0 pitch for a two-bagger. Garrett followed with an infield single, plating Krotine. Garcia later scored on a wild pitch before DO could escape the jam.
Then in the second, the Troubies loaded up the bases immediately: a Jaeya Leavitt single, a McFarland walk and a Krotine bunt single. Guerrera brought in Leavitt on a sacrifice fly to left while McFarland held at second. But McFarland came around two pitches later on Garcia's hit to left. Krotine made it 7-0 when she scored on a rundown during Garrett's ground ball to short.
Garcia tacked on the eighth run in the fourth. She worked a count full before getting hit by an Ava Messina pitch, then moved up station to station on hits by Garrett, Kinsley Imm and Reese Lewis. Messina ultimately escaped, retiring three straight Troubies and stranding the bases loaded.
Del Oro put up five unanswered runs after that point, with Delaney Osborne's homer to left highlighting a three-run fifth. Guerrera turned a double play to get Shea out of that inning. Osborne also slashed an RBI double in the seventh, but was put out attempting to stretch, thanks to a Garrett-to-Guerrera-to-Garcia putout at third. Shea then fanned Nancy Barberio after a 2-0 hole to close out the game.
The SF-DO varsity game was the only contest in action on Monday. The respective JV teams had their game postponed to Tuesday, but that game was then canceled due to the unavailability of umpires in the area.
St. Francis varsity was also originally set to return to action for a road game at St. Mary's on Tuesday, but that game has since been canceled. Instead, the two Troubie squads will host Inderkum on Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
