Troubies hang on against Wolfpack, 5-4

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Senior Alex Garcia hit 3-for-4 with a pair of runs batted in, three other Troubadours collected two hits each, and senior righty Kiley Shea struck out 10 batters in a complete game, as St. Francis protected an early lead in a 5-4 victory over Cosumnes Oaks in a Delta League softball game at Schuster Field Wednesday afternoon.

The Troubies improve to 10-3 overall and hold in second place in the conference standings at 3-1, behind Sheldon (4-0) and a half-game up on Elk Grove (2-1).

Shortstop Francesca Guerrera, left fielder Kylee Garrett and catcher Jaeya Leavitt each hit two hits. Leavitt also posted two RBIs, while Claire Krotine and Kinsley Imm both had doubles. Shea fired a two-hitter and allowed no earned runs in 7.0 innings across. The future Pacific Tiger walked three batters against the 10 punchouts.
St. Francis posted all five of its runs in the first two frames, with Garcia's RBI single, Imm's RBI double and Leavitt's two-run blooper to right establishing the initial lead. The three Gs of Guerrera, Garrett and Garcia singled in succession to tack on another in the second.

CO took advantage of two Troubie errors in the fourth to get on the board, cutting the margin to 5-2. A misshandled bunt in the fifth further allowed another Wolfpack runner to come through, reducing the SF lead to just three. A walk, a sacrifice, a hit batter and another miscue – the Troubies' fifth error of the contest – brought CO to within one, but Shea ultimately got freshman Mya Felizardo to bounce out to Guerrera to end the game.

Garcia's two RBIs raised her team-leading season total to 14. Shea, who joined teammate Kasey McAtee in the school's spring National Letter of Intent and College Commitment celebration, lowered her ERA to 1.73.

The Troubadours were forced to officially forfeit the JV game on the opposite diamond. However, CO and SF agreed to intermingle their squads and play a scrimmage.

Both teams return to action at home on Thursday with 4 p.m. games against Woodcreek.
