SF drops Top 10 Tax Day matchup with Capital

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sophomore catcher Jaeya Leavitt and senior third baseman Alex Garcia had their team's only hits although infielder/pitcher Kinsley Imm drew three walks at the plate while firing six innings of relief, as St. Francis lost a 7-3 matchup with Capital Christian in a varsity-only softball matchup at Schuster Field Monday.

The Troubadours snap their win streak at four in moving to 12-4 for the year. The Cougars improve to 10-2 overall. The meeting pitted two teams ranked among the Sac-Joaquin Section Top 10 by MaxPreps: SF and CC entered the contest at No. 9 and No. 10, respectively.

St. Francis did not manage a hit off Capital's sophomore right-hander Ayla Tuua until its fifth inning. Imm and Reese Lewis opened the frame with consecutive walks, then Leavitt beat out a short grounder down the third base line to load the bases. Then second baseman Isabella Barge drove in the first Troubadour run on similar hustle. She bounded a likely double-play ball to Maddilyn Woodcock, but beat out shortstop Bree Johnson's throw at first. This forced Leavitt at second but allowed Imm to come in, cutting the Cougar lead to 4-1.

Capital added three more runs in the top of the sixth, twice finding the 5-6 hole despite diving stops by Troubie shortstop Francesca Guerrera. St. Francis got one back in its half, drawing four walks off Tuua and scoring a run on a wild pitch.

The Troubies added a third run in the seventh, thanks to Garcia's RBI double off of Capital reliever Ella Magda. Guerrera led off the inning by taking four straight balls. Then two batters later, Garcia ripped a short line drive to center. Tuua, who had yielded the pitching circle to Magda to start the inning, attempted to play the ball in the air but came up short. The ball rolled to the fence, allowing Garcia to stretch to a double and Guerrera to come all the way around for the run. Imm battled back from an 0-2 count for a third out to put the potential equalizer on deck, but Magda coaxed a pop-up in front of the Capital dugout for the final out.

Tuua lasted 6.0 innings with just the one hit and two earned runs against. She fanned eight but also walked eight, allowing the Troubies to manufacture their late scoring.

Imm also went 6.0 innings, having entered in the second with no outs and the Troubies trailing 3-0. She allowed one inherited runner to score on a wild pitch but then retired five straight into the fourth. Imm surrendered a leadoff double by Haylie Alkire then needed just five pitches to send the next three Cougars down on infield outs.

More importantly, Imm's long relief performance allowed St. Francis to rest No. 1 starter Kiley Shea. The Troubies return to action on Wednesday for a matchup between the Delta League's first-place teams: both SF and Sheldon hold matching 4-1 league records heading into to the schedule's midpoint. Game time is 4 p.m. at Schuster Field.
