Troubies take league lead with win over Sheldon

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Junior right fielder Claire Krotine hit 2-for-2 with a double and a stolen base, sophomore center fielder Alexis McFarland finished 2-for-3 and senior right-handed pitcher Kiley Shea allowed just six hits and a walk, leading St. Francis to a 5-2 win over Sheldon in the varsity half of a Delta League softball doubleheader at Schuster Field Wednesday.

The Troubadours improve to 13-4 overall and 5-1 in league play, breaking the tie atop the Delta League standings at the season's midpoint. The Huskies slip to 11-6 for the year and 4-2 in Delta League action.

Shea struck out four batters in her complete game, throwing just 98 pitches with 75 strikes. Senior third baseman Alex Garcia hit 1 of 3 with two runs batted in, while shortstop Francesca Guerrera and catcher Jaeya Leavitt each had a hit and a run scored.

Guerrera put SF on the board with her RBI single in the third, although Sheldon got that run back in the next half inning, with Angie Guzman reaching on a walk, moving to second on a fielder's choice, then legging out the extra base on a hit by freshman pitcher Micah Kennedy.

The Troubies then pulled away in their fifth, with Leavitt and Krotine reaching on singles. Guerrera walked to load the bases with one out, then a costly Husky error allowed both Leavitt and Krotine to score. Garcia followed with her two-run shot through the middle, plating Guerrera and Garrett to extend the lead to 5-1.

Sheldon touched Shea for a hit in the sixth and Kwinci Brown's leadoff home run in the seventh, but then retired three straight to seal the win.

St. Francis' win on the varsity diamond paired with a 15-5 on the junior varsity field across the way. Freshman Gianna Flesoras hit 4-for-5 with five RBIs, while Ariella Alcantar, Emma Fox and Haydyn Haecker also had four hits each. In fact, every Troubie had at least two hits: Marissa Jensen and Julia Nielsen each went 3-for-5 with three RBIs, Jocelyn Villaflor matched that 3-for-5 day, with Gianna Barnes and Lilian Desmond posting 2-for-4 batting totals at the bottom of the order.

In all, the Troubie jayvees finished with 29 hits. Haecker went the distance in the pitching circle, striking out nine Huskies in the process.

Flesoras' offensive contributions are particularly notable given that she joined the team one week earlier to ensure the JV squad could have the remainder of its season.

Both St. Francis teams remain at home to face Pleasant Grove for continued Delta League play on Friday. This is also the program's annual "Booster-Q" barbecue, with all fans treated to free burgers and hot dogs by the SF Booster Club. Both games start at 4 p.m.
