ROCKLIN, Calif. – Senior right-hander Kiley Shea fanned 13 batters against two hits and one walk while senior shortstop Francesca Guerrera hit 4 of 4 at the plate to lead five players with multi-hit games, as St. Francis rolled past Rocklin, 14-1, in the varsity end of a non-league girls' softball doubleheader Monday afternoon.
The Troubadours win their fourth straight game and their third with double-digit run production in improving to 4-1 for the year.
Guerrera singled in the first, third and seventh; and smacked a two-run double in the fifth to compile her first four-hit game since April 28 of her sophomore season. Freshman designated player Kinsley Imm finished 3-for-4 with a double, while junior right fielder Claire Krotine hit 3-for-5 with three runs – including one on a steal of home – plus two RBIs in the leadoff slot. Isabella Barge and Alex Garcia also had two hits each, contributing toward 18 total safeties for the SF offense.
Meanwhile, Shea went the distance, with only an unearned run in the seventh preventing a shutout. The Pacific Tigers commit retired the first seven batters she faced, punching three straight Thunder batters on called strike threes in the second frame.
Overall, the Troubies scored one in the first, four in each of the fourth and fifth, then five more in the seventh, with most of the damage done against Rocklin sophomore Molly Jumelet. Krotine stole home in that first inning, yet it was a pickoff that ultimately prevented SF from posting a crooked number to start. Kylee Garrett's two-out, two-run single highlighted the Troubie fourth, then Guerrera pounded her double to center with two outs in the fifth, scoring Sorina Pometta and Natalie Vigil.
In the seventh, Krotine, Guerrera, Garcia, Imm, Barge, Alexis McFarland and Reese Lewis enjoyed a string of singles to tack on another five to the scoring total. Garcia's and Lewis' hits each plated two in that frame.
Shea has now gone 13.0 consecutive innings without an earned run against her, a stretch that spans relief appearances against Inderkum and River City, Monday's start at Rocklin, and the final three innings of the March 4 road game at Del Oro.
St. Francis junior varsity had a rougher go against its Thunder hosts, yielding 14 runs in the first three innings to fall by a final of 14-2. Center fielder Marissa Jensen hit 2-for-2 for the game, with catcher Addison Hutchcraft delivering a two-run single to bring in Jensen and Jaeya Leavitt with two out in the fourth. Leavitt, a sophomore on loan from the varsity team, took over the pitching circle in the third and went two scoreless innings with two strikeouts to finish the contest.
The Troubie varsity squad returns to action for a road game on Wednesday against St. Mary's at Arnaiz Stadium in Stockton. This is a makeup date for the March 5 visit that was postponed due to field conditions. The jayvees, not on the Stockton trip, instead take part in a rare JV-only visit to Capital Christian on Tuesday.
