Troubies return home to post doubleheader sweep

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Junior outfielders Kylee Garrett and Claire Krotine each hit 2-for-3 with RBI singles while senior pitcher Kiley Shea scattered six hits with no walks, leading St. Francis to a 3-1 win in the varsity half of a Delta League softball doubleheader Monday afternoon.

The Troubadours win their eighth straight game to improve to 8-1 overall and 2-0 in league play.

Garrett helped the Troubies draw first blood in the fourth, leading off with a hit to left. She moved up to second on a bobbled grounder two pitches later, then advanced to third on Reese Lewis' sacrifice bunt. With Garrett on third and Alex Garcia on second, Alexis McFarland bounced out to the right side, leaving EG first baseman Savannah Ganzler with no choice but to touch her own bag for the second out. Garrett and Garcia each moved up 60 feet to break the scoreless tie.

Herd third baseman Annabele Focht redeemed her error in the previous half inning by reaching on a single in the top of the fifth, then coming home for the equalizer on Taylor Fitzgerald's hit two batters later. However, Garrett ended the threat by snaring Addison Buckley's liner to left.

The Troubies responded immediately with some small ball in their fifth: catcher Jaeya Leavitt beat out a bunt on the first pitch, then Taylor Trafican sacrificed her to second on the second offering from EG righty Kaylee Buck. This set up the RBI hits from Krotine and Garrett, with only a Focht grab of a Lewis line drive ending the rally.

Shea retired the side in order on 10 pitches in the sixth then coaxed two pop-ups and a comebacker to ease through the seventh en route to the complete-game win.

Krotine had her team's lone extra-base hit, legging out a two-out double in the third. She leads the team in hitting at .438, with her 1.066 OPS (.472/.593) leading Troubie qualifiers. Shea improved her ERA to just 1.02, and has allowed just 25 hits and seven walks in 41.0 innings.

On the junior varsity diamond, freshman Kinsley Imm allowed eight hits and struck out eight against just one walk in a 2-0 shutout. Imm, a regular contributor to varsity with her .421/.476/.789 offensive output in 21 plate appearances, donned the JV gear for the day to provide the Troubies with enough players to play.

Shortstop Ariella Alcantar hit a double and a triple with a walk and two runs for the day. Jocelyn Villaflor and Emma Fox each went 2-for-3 with an RBI. The two corner infielders hit back-to-back singles in the opening frame, with Fox's hit bringing in Alcantar for the first run. Then when Alcantar drove a triple to left in the fifth, it was Villaflor who brought her in, dropping a fly ball into short right field.

The Herd JV threatened in each of the second, third and fourth innings but could not break up Imm's shutout. A double steal put two runners in scoring position in the third, but Imm sent Maliah Aquino down swinging for the second out, then got Emilee Otten to ground out harmlessly to strand the two runners.

In the fourth, Elk Grove again had runners at second and third, but second baseman Gianna Barnes gloved a Chloe Miller line drive to end the rally. Then in the fifth, Imm, catcher Julia Nelsen and the third baseman Fox retired Rebecca Nixon in a rundown between third and home, once again protecting the shutout. Barnes later finished the game with another grab, snatching an Aquino line drive just inches from the dirt for the final out.

St. Francis returns to league action on Wednesday for a 4 p.m. doubleheader at Davis. Both games take place in Community Park, immediately adjacent to the east of the high school.
