Cross Country Takes Varsity and Frosh/Soph League Titles

RIO LINDA, Calif. – Freshman Cate Joaquin led a St. Francis attack with six of the top 10 runners to take the team title at the Delta League meet on Wednesday at the Cherry Island Soccer Complex.

"For us it was an extraordinary day with some great individual performances," said Head Coach Aaron Rios. "It was a great race for Cate and huge confidence boost going into our race on Saturday."

Joaquin ran at the front of the race, breaking with two runners from Davis. She sprinted to the lead during the final turn to the finish line to cross in 18:22 to finish ahead of Davis' Charlotte Mitchell (18:26) and Aniela Mitchell (18:31).

Junior Haley Silva crossed fourth overall for the Troubadours in 18:41 followed by a pack of Troubies from sixth to ninth place. Junior Izzy Fauria was sixth in 18:52 followed by freshman Tatiana Cornejo, senior Sophie DeBenedetti and sophomore Hanna Hekkanen.

"It feels great to get the team win and put ourselves out there," said DeBenedetti. "Everyone did amazing. We ran a great pack race together and individually the girls kept pushing me. We want to keep the momentum going for Capital Cross."

St. Francis totaled 26 points to edge the Blue Devils (31 points). Sheldon was third with 90 points and Franklin finished fourth with 113.

St. Francis won the Frosh/Soph team title with 44 points to defeat second-place Elk Grove with 52 points.
