SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Top-seed St. Francis volleyball opened the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I playoff play with 3-0 win over No. 17 Enochs 25-13, 25-10, 25-8.
"We started a little slow and then kicked it into gear," said Head Coach Alynn Wright. "I was pleased with how we finished the second and third sets. We were really playing well."
The Eagles challenged the Troubies in the first set before SF prevailed 25-13.
"I like the way we spread the offense," said Wright. "We had a lot of hitters involved tonight. Everyone contributed. It was fun to see the players we brought up from the JV squad an opportunity. They did well and it was fun for them."
Eight players recorded kills for the team led by 11 by Alexa Edwards. Junior Ashley Magley had nine kills and hit .562, while junior Chloe Henning had seven kills and hit .656. As a team, SF hit .500 for the match. JV promotions Sophia Garza and Justine Pulmones both saw their first varsity action.
The Troubies played strong the rest of the match, closing out with wins in the final two sets. Junior Kiley Kane sparked the third set with 13 straight service points.
"I take it point by point so I forget about the other points," said Kane, who had three aces, three kills and seven digs in the match.
St. Francis (33-2) will face No. 9 Turlock (26-19) on Thursday. They upset No. 8 Woodcreek 3-1 on Tuesday. Other winners on Tuesday included No. 3 Oak Ridge, No. 4 St. Mary's, No. 5 Cosumnes Oaks, No. 6 Pleasant Grover, No. 7 Gregori as the top seven seeds all advanced.
"It was really nice to get through the first round but I feel like we have so much longer to go," said junior Kiley Kane. "We have to work as a team even more. Tonight we all came together and did well as a team."
