SF advances to section soccer semifinal

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Senior Elizabeth Barger assisted on two goals while senior Caitlin Hafenstein scored one and drew a penalty kick for another, lifting top-seeded St. Francis to a 4-1 win over No. 8-seeded Tracy in a drizzly Sac-Joaquin Section Division II girls' soccer quarterfinal game at Cristo Rey's Adamson Family Sports Complex Wednesday.

The Troubadours improve to 18-4-3 for the season, and will now host No. 4-seeded Vacaville on Friday. Game time is 4 p.m., against at CRHSS. The Bulldogs finish their year at 9-6-1.

Barger collected her two assists on either side of the halftime break, the first of which found Estella Bacsafra approximately 40 yards out near the Tracy bench with less than seven minutes remaining in the half. Bacsafra delivered an arcing shot out of the reach of junior goalkeeper Jasmin Alvarez into the corner of the cage. Barger then assisted Sofia Rabinovitz off an initial Giada Pagano throw-in at the 43rd minute.

This goal began a short flurry of goals that resulted in St. Francis doubling its lead to 4-0. Hafenstein was fouled hard inside the 18, and senior Yasmin Azar came in to convert the enusing penalty kick in the 44th. Then Hafenstein and Pagano teamed up for the fourth goal in the 48th.

Only a Tracy goal in the 54th, scored by sophomore Aubrie Prichard on a throw-in, prevented SF keepers Maggie Buffleben and Angelina Delaini from a combined shutout.

The Troubies dominated possession down the stretch to stay in front, with Azar, sophomore Miley Blough, junior Carly Hall and junior Maggie Koerwitz peppering the Bulldog goal with shots across the final 12 minutes of play.

Vacaville dispatched Bella Vista, 2-1, in the opposite quarterfinal to St. Francis to advance to Friday's semifinal. The Troubies continue their quest for a 15th all-time CIFSJS banner and their first since 2020. The last meeting between the two teams kicked off that 2020 run, with junior Jackie Stanco scoring a brace to lead SF past then-No. 16 Vacaville by a 5-0 final.
