Troubies open playoffs with Mustangs... again
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – St. Francis earned the top seed and will host 16th-seeded Mountain House in the first round of the 2024 Sac-Joaquin Section Div. II girls' soccer championship tournament, the governing body announced Wednesday. The contest will take place at Cristo Rey High School's Adamson Family Sports Complex at a time to be finalized later in the week.

The Troubadours (16-4-3) earned one of the Delta League's four at-large spots in the CIF-SJS postseason, thanks to a third-place record of 9-2-1 in a tough league race. The Mustangs (14-9-1) snared a D-II berth by virtue of their Western Athletic Conferencechampionship. They finished at 12-1-1 in league, well ahead of runner-up Lathrop.

Oddly, this is the second straight year that SF and MH will meet in the D-II playoff opener. St. Francis won this matchup by an 8-0 final last season to kick off its path to the section title game.

Senior and Coastal Carolina commit Yasmin Azar leads the Troubies in goals (14) and total points (33), while her five assists are tied for third behind Jada Dwyre and Mia Barsotti (six each). Caitlin Hafenstein and Elizabeth Barger have contributed eight goals apiece, while Dwyre has another seven. Overall, SF has 11 different players who have netted at least two goals during the 23-game regular season. The Troubies enjoyed an undefeated streak of 14 games (11-0-3) from December 16 to February 2, a span that included eight shutouts.

Leading the Mustangs is junior striker Jayden Reynolds with her 36 goals and 12 assists for the season, surpassing her totals of 27 and 11 from her first two varsity seasons combined. Sofia Ramos and Fuatai Mose each have another eight goals on the books. Reynolds performed seven hat tricks in the 2023-24 regular season, including a career-best five goals against Riverbank on December 7. Overall, Mountain House has outscored opponents by a 69-38 margin in its 25 games.

Other top seeds in the CIF-SJS Div. II bracket include No. 2 Woodcreek, No. 3 Rocklin and No. 4 Vacaville. A Troubadour win on Saturday would result in a February 14 quarterfinal matchup against either Tracy or Whitney.

St. Francis owns 14 all-time section titles, with 2020 being the most recent. The Troubadours also won the 2019 NorCal championship. This is the program's ninth season under the tutelage of head coach Maryclaire Robinson, a St. Francis and Colorado College alumna who later earned Big West Conference Coach of the Year distinction at UC Davis before returning to her alma mater.
