Troubie soccer sweeps Wolfpack at home

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Senior Elizabeth Barger and junior Carly Hall scored goals on either end of St. Francis' 2-0 win over Cosumnes Oaks in the varsity opener of a windy and drizzly Delta League girls' soccer doubleheader at Cristo Rey's Adamson Family Sports Complex Wednesday night.

The Troubadours improve to 14-3-2 for the year and 7-1-1 in league play, maintaining at least second place in the standings. Additionally, St. Francis extends its undefeated streak to 11 games, having compiled a 9-0-2 mark since its road loss at Franklin back on December 15.

The Troubies got on the board when Estella Bacsafra delivered an entry pass to Elizabeth Barger in just the third minute of play. That score held through halftime and well into the second half, when Hall inadvertently doubled the margin. What appeared to be a long cross to sophomore Miley Blough instead eluded the CO goalkeeper and bounced into the cage in the 78th minute.

The Wolfpack enjoyed a handful of opportunities to equalize prior to Hall's goal, including two free kicks by junior Jazleen Bell. Senior Mia Barsotti stopped the first chance in the 17th minute as part of a wall with Blough and senior Caitlin Hafenstein. Goalkeeper Angelina Delaini posted her lone save against Bell in the 73rd to maintain her shutout.

Barger now has six goals for the year. Hall, who had two goals and two assists for St. Francis' JV Gold in 2022-23, picked up her first scoring stat as a varsity player.

The JV Gold squad also prevailed in its half of the doubleheader, with Madeline Squaglia and Holland Sperber each posting a brace in a 6-1 win over the Wolfpack in the nightcap, with Squaglia adding an assist for five total points.

Oddly, JV Gold had to overcome a brief deficit, with CO scoring on a free kick in the fifth minute. But Squaglia and Nassali Serwanga answered immediately in the 7th and 9th, putting SF up on top for good. That score held up into the halftime break, then the Troubies played the second half with a tailwind, adding four more tallies. Squaglia made it 3-1 thanks to a cross from Ellie Cook in the 44th. Sperber netted her goals on putback opportunities in front of the Wolfpack cage in the 50th and 75th.

Freshman Momina Niazi, formerly of the program's frosh-soph JV Red squad, hit her first Gold goal in the 69th. Audrey Deelstra collected a corner kick then set up Niazi for the finish.

Both varsity and JV Gold head to Shledon on Friday for continued Delta League action, then return "home" to CRHSS for the much-awaited Holy Cup doubleheader against Christian Brothers on Saturday. JV Gold plays at noon, varsity at 2 p.m., with JV Red kicking off the tripleheader with a 10 a.m. game against River City. Admission is free although fixed seating is limited at the Adamson complex. Spectators are welcome and encouraged to bring their own seating.
