Troubie soccer, hoop earn road NorCal playoff berths

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – St. Francis High School's two winter sports will travel for their respective first-round playoff games, the CIF announced Sunday afternoon. The Troubadour soccer team earned the No. 7 seed in the NorCal Division I Regional and will face No. 2-seeded Carondelet on Tuesday at 5 p.m., while SF basketball snared a No. 13 seed and will take on fourth-seeded Central High in Fresno at 7 p.m that same night.

Tickets for all CIF postseason events are available only through the GoFan website and app. Direct links will appear on St. Francis' channel at https://gofan.co/app/school/CA8032 later on Sunday.

The 18-1-4 Troubie soccer team advanced to the Sac-Joaquin Section title game for the 19th time in school history, ultimately falling to Del Oro by a 1-0 final. St. Francis and Carondelet last squared off in the 2020 NorCal Division I semifinal, with the Cougars prevailing in a 3-2 upset before beating Archbishop Mitty in the finale.

Carondelet enters the NorCal draw with a 19-2-1 overall record, having dominated the North Coast Section D-1 tournament with shutouts against Freedom (5-0), Monte Vista (3-0) and San Ramon Valley (4-0). Tuesday's soccer contest will take place at the Carondelet Athletics Complex at 3737 Valley Vista Road in Walnut Creek.

St. Francis basketball (23-5) was officially awarded the Sac-Joaquin Section's lone at-large qualifier to the state tournament after completion of the previous week's semifinal round, but the divisional assignment and pairing was not determined until Sunday's selection meeting.

The Grizzlies enter the state draw with an 18-12 overall record. Their stint in the Central Section D-1 bracket began with a 53-30 win over 12th-seeded Roosevelt before a 59-49 loss to fellow Tri-Rivers Athletic Conference member Buchanan in the quarterfinal round. In fact, the TRAC rates as the toughest league in the CS, with Clovis West, Clovis, Buchanan and Central occupying four of the top five slots in MaxPrep's section rankings.

Tuesday's tip-off is set for 7 p.m.

Each of the two St. Francis winter sports programs have captured a NorCal title in the last decade. Soccer beat Mountain View in a 1-0 overtime battle for the championship on March 2, 2019. Three years earlier, basketball overcame a 30-18 halftime deficit to beat Castro Valley, 66-52, at Sleep Train Arena.
