Lions snap Troubies' win streak at five

Lions snap Troubies' win streak at five

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Senior wing Jadyn Weaver drained five three-pointers while sophomore guard Sydney Teoh added another 12, but St. Francis finally saw its season-opening streak come to an end, falling by a 67-47 final to McClatchy in a non-league girls' high school basketball matchup at the SFHS gym Thursday night.

The Troubadours move to 5-1 for the year. The Lions improve to 4-2, winning their second straight game against a Delta League member. CKM trounced Cosumnes Oaks, 73-38, just two days earlier.

Senior point guard Emily Dusel led St. Francis with 11 rebounds with junior forward Chidera Okoye tallying another 10. The two pounded the boards on opposite ends: eight of Dusel's rebounds were on the offensive end, while Okoye had eight on the defensive side. Okoye also scored eight points, all in the fourth quarter.

For the Lions, senior Tamaria Rumph and sophomore Nina Cain each scored 16, with Rumph frequently assisting Cain. Alia Wilson added nine points, all in the first half, propelling McClatchy to a 32-21 halftime lead.

St. Francis held the lead for just 24 seconds in the entire contest: from the time Brianna McGahan buried a three-pointer to put her team up by a 3-2 margin, to the time Cain's second-chance bucket ignited what became a 10-0 run from the 5:51 to 4:05 marks in the first quarter.

The Troubadours managed to pull within four on two occasions in the second quarter. Weaver hit her third trey on an assist from Dusel during a fast break at 5:37. This closed the gap to just 21-17 for the Lions. Teoh's drive set the board at 23-19 with 4:33 left, then SF appeared to have an opportunity when Rumph went into foul trouble: her third violation at midcourt sent her to the CKM bench with 3:20 to go before halftime. Unfortunately, the Troubies could not capitalize on Rumph's absence, while the Lions surged ahead to the 11-point edge at halftime. Wilson drew a foul on a layup at the 1:59 mark then hit the and-one to make it 30-21, then Cain's jumper with 40 seconds increased the advantage to 32-21.

The Lions largely sealed the contest in the third quarter, holding their hosts without a field goal for more than five full minutes as part of a 15-1 run. Teoh hit a baseline runner at the 6:05 mark to keep the deficit at 11, or 34-23. But Rumph knocked down a corner three on the opposite end, then later assisted center Milah Masters for scores at 3:33 and 2:05. A three-pointer from Kaela Stancil-Williams increased the McClatchy lead to 49-24 before Dusel's rebound-and-putback combo ended the drought of Troubie baskets.

Rumph completed a three-point play to open the fourth, extending the CKM lead to 52-26, while her coast-to-coast drive with 4:30 left maxed the margin to a 29-point, 61-32 edge. St. Francis mounted a late rally, with Okoye scoring three field goals and Weaver hitting a pair of threes in the final 2:30 of play. Still, with the exception of McGahan's transition score with 23 ticks left, McClatchy maintained at least a 20-point lead for the entirety of the fourth frame.

The McClatchy program comes off a Sac-Joaquin Section Division I semifinal berth and NorCal Regional appearance in 2022.

St. Francis returns to action at home on Tuesday in a doubleheader with Grant Union. The JV Gold, idle on Thursday due to the Lions not having a jayvee program, will tip off at 5:30. The varsity will then take on the Pacers at 7 p.m.
