Troubies fall to Central in CIF state opener

FRESNO, Calif. – Sophomore point guard Sydney Teoh scored 16 points while juniors Brianna McGahan and Chidera Okoye also scored in double figures, but 13th-seeded St. Francis could not overcome an early deficit in falling to No. 4-seeded Central, 67-53, in the first round of the CIF State Division II girls' basketball tourney Tuesday night.

The Troubadours finish the season with a 23-6 under the guidance of first-year head coach Brittany Woodard.

McGahan and Okoye scored 13 and 11 points, respectively, while Okoye added eight rebounds and a pair of steals. Sophomore Aubrey O'Donnell posted a team-leading nine rebounds while senior Jadyn Weaver sank two three-pointers in her career finale.

The Grizzlies never trailed in the contest, scoring six unanswered before Okoye put SF on the board with a field goal plus and an-one free throw. Teoh later hit both ends of a trip to the stripe to cut the margin to 6-5, but Central scored nine of the next 11 to boost its lead to 15-7.

The Troubies ultimately trailed 19-11 through the first period and 33-24 at the halftime break. Weaver, who netted a trey in the second period to bring the score to 30-21, hit another one to start the second half, bringing SF to within a 33-27 deficit. That was the closest the Troubies came to closing the gap, with Illicia Ross and Talia Maxwell answering with back-to-back scores for Central, pushing the lead to 10 at 37-27.

Central held its largest lead of 56-38 early in the fourth as Maxwell scored five of her 37 total points to start that frame.

Teoh, McGahan and Weaver each finished the season averaging double-figure offense: Teoh at 11.5 points per game, McGahan at 11.2 and Weaver at 10.9. Weaver's two three-pointers also brought her season total to a team-best 50. Okoye (222) and senior Emily Dusel (155) finished as the Troubies' leading rebounders.
