Robinson, Woodard lead winter Delta League honors

Robinson, Woodard lead winter Delta League honors

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – St. Francis' Maryclaire Robinson and Brittany Woodard garnered Delta League Coach of the Year honors for girls' soccer and girls' basketball, respectively, as the league office rolled out its winter honors Wednesday. The Troubadour basketball team won the league title outright while the soccer team shared the banner with fellow area powerhouse Davis.

Additionally, eight Troubie athletes – five in soccer, three in basketball – earned all-league recognition. As a policy, the league does not formally announce its awards all member teams in all sports have completed CIF postseason action.

This is the second consecutive Delta League Coach of the Year nod for Robinson, who first assumed the SF helm on an interim basis in 2015 before taking over as a full-time head coach a year later. Soccer had five Troubie honorees on the All-Delta League rolls: junior defender Elizabeth Barger, senior midfielder Brooke Castro, senior forward Jaycee DeFazio, junior defender Giada Pagano, and senior attacker Micaela Romo.

The Troubies went 18-2-4 for the year, going unbeaten throughout the regular season. They advanced to the Sac-Joaquin Section title game for the 19th time in program history, losing to Del Oro in the championship game by a 1-0 final. St. Francis then qualified for the CIF NorCal Regional, dropping its first-round matchup at Carondelet on Tuesday.

In basketball, Woodard's Coach of the Year nod caps a rookie season in which she guided St. Francis to a 23-6 overall record, a perfect 12-0 mark in the Delta League, and the program's first Sac-Joaquin Section postseason win in five years. Junior Brianna McGahan, sophomore Sydney Teoh and senior Jadyn Weaver each earned spots on the All-Delta League squad.

The Troubie hoop squad ultimately fell in the section quarterfinal to McClatchy, but was awarded an at-large berth to the CIF state championship tourney. St. Francis fell to Central (Fresno) in the NorCal Regional opener on Tuesday night.

Additionally, St. Francis girls' soccer held its season banquet during the run-up to the section title contest. Romo, DeFazio and junior Caitlin Hafenstein each tied for the team's Offensive MVP award, while Castro was named as Defensive MVP. Maggie Koerwitz won Newcomer of the Year, Elise Thomas captured the team's Cornerstone Award, while Giada Pagano's name was added to the perpetual Golden Boot Award.

The Troubies' JV Gold and JV Red soccer teams also held season banquets in February. Their respective award winners are listed below.

Each team for each sport is awarded an honoree for the league's Sportsmanship team. SF senior Madeline Welch was selected as the soccer representative, while Troubie hoop has yet to select its winner. The basketball team has also not held its season banquet, at which the team award winners will be announced.
