Troubies hold off Del Oro in home hoop opener

Troubies hold off Del Oro in home hoop opener

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Senior wing Jadyn Weaver sank a pair of three-pointers on her way to a team-high 17 points while junior Brianna McGahan and sophomore Sydney Teoh each added 13, helping St. Francis hold off a late comeback surge to claim a 57-51 win over Del Oro in the varsity finale of a girls' prep basketball tripleheader Monday night.

The varsity win prevented a sweep against the Troubadours, as the JV Red squad lost to the Golden Eagles by a 51-22 final while the JV Gold fell 48-17 in the contests leading up to the 7 p.m. nightcap.

Weaver scored nine of her points in the first quarter as part of a 13-0 overall run. The point guard Teoh did most of her scoring damage from the paint, including back-to-back drives through the lane that helped propel SF to a 32-18 halftime lead. McGahan delivered a pair of buckets in each of the first two quarters, then hit her fifth on a hook shot to open the third.

The Troubies led 48-33 entering the fourth and extended their edge by as many as 20, when Weaver collected a pass from Teoh at the top of the key and drained the three-pointer to set the board at 55-35. However, Del Oro went on a 16-1 run to close the gap to 56-51 with 27 seconds remaining in the contest. A SF turnover in the backcourt then provided the Golden Eagles to make it a one-possession game, but two three-point attempts missed. Troubie senior Emily Dusel finally snared the defensive rebound, then Teoh drew a foul at midcourt with :03 remaining. Teoh hit the second of her attempts, bringing the score to its final 57-51.

The 5-foot-3 Dusel led the Troubies with nine rebounds, more due to hustle rather than height. Junior forward Chidera Okoye added another eight boards and six points in just 13 minutes of floor time.

St. Francis' JV Gold squad suffered from a floor drought that lasted more than two full quarters in its loss to Del Oro's jayvees. Colleen Medina scored eight, Karly Okamoto had another four, and Sophia Hendrix and Lilian Vicio had one field goal among them for the remaining five points.

Okamoto had the only scoring in a 14-4 first quarter for the Eagles, scoring on the opening tip then again at the 6:23 mark. The Troubies then only managed three free throws – two from Vicio and one from Hendrix – for the rest of the half to fall to 26-7 at the break. Medina broke the basket-less stretch with her drive with 2:32 left in the third, ending a span of almost 19 minutes without an SF field goal.

Medina scored twice in the fourth, first thanks to a pick by fellow freshman Reese Walker, then again on a coast-to-coast scamper at the 5:31 mark. Hendrix scored the last points by either team on her rebound and putback with 1:39 left.

In Monday's opener, St. Francis' all-freshman JV Red squad struggled offensively but managed to stifle the Golden Eagles defensively to stay within a 23-15 deficit at the half. Meanwhile, Annie Swanson dominated the boards for the second straight game, finishing with 11 rebounds – including nine on the defensive end.

Forward Lauren Herbelin led the way with eight points while Swanson added another four. However, Del Oro found its offensive strike in the third quarter, outscoring its host by a 21-2 margin in that frame. Herbelin had the only Troubie scoring, hitting a pair of three throws in that span. This pushed the Eagle lead to 44-17 heading into the fourth. Swanson grabbed four rebounds, drilled a 17-footer and assisted Herbelin to highlight the Troubies in that last quarter.

The JV Gold and varsity squads return to action in less than 24 hours with road games at Rocklin on Tuesday. Tip-off times are 5:30 and 7 p.m., respectively. The JV Red goes idle until after the Thanksgiving break, hosting Nevada Union as a lead-in to a home doubleheader against Rodriguez. Tickets for all SF home games are available only through GoFan at gofan.co/app/school/CA8032.
