Troubies finish as inaugural SJS runners-up

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Seniors Brynley Hodge and Jane Tattersall each finished with four total points but second-seeded St. Francis came up short by an 8-6 final to top-seeded Oak Ridge in a blustery Sac-Joaquin Section girls' lacrosse championship game at Christian Brothers' Bollinger Stadium Saturday afternoon.

The Troubadours finish their season at 11-4, while the Trojans end up with a 20-2 overall record. This is the first season that the SJS has sponsored a championship for lacrosse, with these two teams previously traveling to the North Coast Section for the postseason.

Saturday's contest was also among the two closest 2024 challenges any SJS team had given Oak Ridge, whose only two losses came against San Ramon Valley and Sacred Heart Prep – the top two teams in California by MaxPreps, and the favorites to win the North Coast and Central Coast sections, respectively. Only Granite Bay's 12-11 loss represents a smaller margin of defeat against this year's Trojans.

Tattersall scored three goals plus an assist to Hodge midway through the fourth quarter. Hodge netted goals in each of the second and fourth frames, while assisting Tattersall twice. The second connection between the two Division I commits gave St. Francis a 5-4 lead with eight minutes left in the third.

Freshman goalkeeper Jayel Miller set the tone early when she blocked Shayla Takkunen's eight-meter attempt just 40 seconds after the opening draw, one of Miller's seven total saves. Then junior attacker Olivia Hamm continued her strong finish to the 2024 season by scoring the game's first goal. She slashed through the eight to convert a Karly Okamoto feed in the sixth minute.

However, that proved to be the only Troubie shot of the first quarter, as Brooklyn Price assisted Caitlin Beckman on consecutive goals to boost OR to a 2-1 lead after 12 minutes. Tattersall's drive in the 17th minute equalized at 2-2, only for junior Annika Tanner to net the first of her game-high four goals just 30 seconds later. Still, Tattersall scored again at the 6:04 mark to tie the contest for a third time, then Hodge's eight-meter strike gave SF its first lead with 3:27 remaining. The 4-3 score carried into halftime.

Trojan junior Tori Ross hit an eight-meter of her own to start the third, evening the proceedings at 4-4. Then Tattersall and Beckman each completed their respective hat tricks within a span of 14 seconds, resulting in the game's fifth tie at 5-5.

The tide began to shift toward the Oak Ridge cause at this point, with the Trojans largely controlling the draw and maintaining possession. Tanner scored three more goals across the final 16 minutes of the contest, with her crease roll at the 4:02 mark of the third serving as the final go-ahead. Tattersall hit Hodge for the sixth Troubie goal with just under five minutes to play, but a Tanner insurance goal and one final draw control to OR junior Alex Remily clinched the inaugural SJS title for the El Dorado Hills power.

Saturday's finale marked the last prep game for five seniors: Hodge, Tattersall, Brianna McGahan, Elizabeth Barger and May Conlin. McGahan, Barger, Conlin and junior Cami Zucker were instrumental in holding Oak Ridge to only eight goals, its lowest output since the 9-6 loss to SRV on March 19.

Tattersall and Hodge finish the year with 43 and 40 goals, respectively, with sophomore Keira Miles ranking third at 37. Okamoto's assist to Hamm put her season total at 39. Okamoto now has the top three season assists totals in school history: the 52 last year, 48 in her freshman year, plus the 39 this season. Hodge (46), Miles (41) and Zia Smith (40) were the team's draw control leaders, marking the first time that three Troubies had 40 or more in the same season.

Finally, the 2024 season marked the first in which the team's primary goalkeeper was a freshman. Miller totaled 79 saves with 87 goals against for a .475 average, putting her eighth and sixth among the school's season bests.
