CUPERTINO, Calif. – Senior Jane Tattersall netted four goals and won nine draw controls while sophomore Keira Miles added a hat trick but a goal by April Bryant almost two minutes into the sudden victory period sank St. Francis by a 10-9 final in the varsity nightcap of a non-league girls' prep lacrosse doubleheader Wednesday night.
The Troubadours even their season record to 1-1 in a rematch of last year's North Coast Section matchup with the Mustangs – a game that oddly had an identical 10-9 final score.
Karly Okamoto and Elizabeth Barger each scored a goal, with Barger adding three caused turnovers. Goalkeeper Jayel Miller posted seven saves, including five in the first half. St. Francis led 4-3 at the break, with Tattersall scoring back-to-back as part of a 4-1 start.
Bryant's goal was her fifth of the game. She had two in a 4-0 Mustang run that turned a 4-1 SF lead early in the second quarter into a short-lived 5-4 MV advantage in the third. However, as quickly as Bryant scored the go-ahead, the Troubies responded with four unanswered. Tattersall hit the equalizer, then was immediately followed by Miles. Barger made it 7-5, then Miles completed her hat trick near the end of the third to restore the SF lead to three.
Monte Vista took control in the fourth, with Bryant bookending another 4-0 run. She gave her team a 9-8 lead, only to have Tattersall bury a shot on a crease roll to make it 9-9. Credit Miller and Mustang goalie Ella Geernaert for stops in the final stretch as well.
Tattersall won the initial draw in overtime, but Geernaert halted back-to-back shots. Instead, Bryant popped the game-winner approximately 1:48 into the sudden victory period.
The varsity heartbreaker followed a 12-3 loss for St. Francis' junior varsity. Nevaeh Gavino, Reese Walker and Lizzie David each scored for the Troubies while goalkeeper Claire Gabri enjoyed another strong showing in the crease with 18 saves.
Both teams return home to host Saint Francis of Mountain View at Bella Vista on Saturday. Varsity plays at 1:30 with JV following a 3 p.m. The Lancers are already 3-0 for the season, following last year's Central Coast Section semifinal berth.
