Troubies hold off Grizzlies in Saturday LAX showdown

GRANITE BAY, Calif. – Senior midfielder Jane Tattersall posted a hat trick and an assist for a team-leading four total points while Sara Ellis, Brynley Hodge and Keira Miles also contributed multi-goal offense, leading St. Francis to an 11-9 win over Granite Bay in non-league girls' lacrosse action Saturday afternoon.

The Troubadours improve to 4-2 for the year. This also marks their third straight win in a series that was previously dominated by the Grizzlies, to the tune of 10 straight GB victories from 2014 through 2021.

Tattersall, a Winthrop commit who previously played for the Grizzlies, scored both of St. Francis' goals in a 2-2 tie through the first quarter. GB briefly took a lead on a Mary Pike goal early in the second, then Miles equalized in the 20th to even the proceedings at 3-3. However, junior Ella Speicher netted the go-ahead with just 1:16 remaining to give the Grizzlies a 4-3 halftime edge.

The Troubies ran out to five straight after the break, all from the sticks of five different players: Karly Okamoto, Hodge, Ellis, Jade Abalateo and Tattersall. Granite Bay interrupted the run with a goal in the 34th, only for Ellis to complete her brace after the subsequent draw. The Troubies entered the fourth with a 9-5 lead, then extended their edge to six on goals from Hodge and Miles to start the frame.

Senior Natalie McGuckin went back-to-back to start a 4-0 Granite Bay finish, but SF had afforded itself enough of a margin to hold of its host.

The varsity win followed a tough 16-1 loss for the Troubadours' junior varsity. Sophomore Rebecca Mochel scored one of just two SF shots, while fellow 10th grader Nevaeh Gavino won four draw controls.

Both teams continue a nearly month-long stretch of road games with a doubleheader at Rio Americano on Wednesday. Varsity opens at 3:30, followed by JV at approximately 5 p.m.
