Golden Eagles edge Troubies in LAX thriller

LOOMIS, Calif. – Senior Jane Tattersall scored four goals while junior Zia Smith added another two, but a Del Oro goal with less than three minutes left in the fourth quarter sank St. Francis by a 7-6 final in a non-league girls' prep lacrosse contest on Fletcher-Christiansen Field at Golden Eagle Stadium Monday night.

The Troubadours suffer their second one-goal loss of the season, in evening their overall record to 2-2.

Overall, Monday's game featured five ties and four lead changes. Tattersall got SF out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of eight-meter goals in the first quarter, but Golden Eagle sophomore Riley Weber scored an eight-meter of her own with 1:11 left in the second quarter, then assisted Presley Macktinger in the final seconds before halftime to knot the game at 2-2. Macktinger had initiated that possession with a steal in the Troubies' attacking third, Weber cleared to the offensive side, then fed Macktinger for the equalize.

DO took its first lead when Lauren Snay picked up a ground ball on a broken St. Francis clear attempt, then fired into the net less than three minutes into the third. Tattersall later earned another trip to the eight-meter arc, only to have Eagle goaltender Cameron Koepke stop the initial shot. But Smith came in to win the ground ball and hit the putback to even the score at 3-3.

Del Oro won the next draw despite an injury to Syndey Weber in the process, resulting in a second Riley Weber goal at the 4:33 mark in the third, putting the Golden Eagles back on top by a 4-3 margin. Yet again, it was Smith who answered back, converting a slick feed from Brynley Hodge into a goal with 2:58 left. St. Francis then regained a 5-4 lead when Hodge won the next drew, allowing Karly Okamoto to assist Tattersall for the go-ahead. Still, Macktinger came through for her second goal when Estela Vesga set her up on a free-position opportunity at the 1:16 mark. This set the board at 5-5 heading into the final frame.

Del Oro drew foul after foul inside the arc to earn trips to the eight-meter arc, but Troubie freshman Jayel Miller came up with saves on the first two. Instead, it took Macktinger opting to assist Snay rather than taking a shot to put the Golden Eagles back up by a 6-5 margin in the 41st minute of the game. On the other end, Tattersall drew a foul dead center inside the eight, and converted the subsequent eight-meter chance to tie the game for a fifth time at 6-6.

DO nearly took a lead at the five-minute mark when an errant pass back to Miller nearly entered the Troubie cage. Instead, SF dodged that bullet when senior defender Brianna McGahan notched one of her two caused turnovers and Miller stopped an Avery Phillips shot. Still, the Troubies struggled to transition to their attacking third, with Del Oro gaining possession on defense.

Oddly, it was a loose Eagle pass that led to the game-winning goal. Macktinger scooped up a wild Riley Weber pass around the top of the fan, then took it in for her hat trick goal and the go-ahead with 2:53 left. Smith won the next draw control, allowing St. Francis a chance to tie the contest. Koepke again stepped up with two saves in the next minute, with Riley Weber picking up the ground ball on the third missed shot. She quickly cleared to her offensive restraining line, and DO called a timeout with less than a minute remaining.

Weber handled the ball for the final 53 seconds, avoiding the critical scoring area so as to not risk stopping the clock. She managed to elude every Troubie attempt to check her stick in protecting her team's lead.

The varsity loss followed a 9-2 setback for the SF junior varsity. Elle Lofing and Nevaeh Gavino each scored early goals, while goalkeeper Claire Gabri posted seven saves. Freshman Launa Hethcock led DO with four goals.

Both St. Francis teams turn around for a road doubleheader at Woodcreek on Tuesday. Game times are 5:30 and 7 p.m. for JV and varsity, respectively.
