Hodge, Gavino score hat tricks in LAX sweep at Rio

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Senior Brynley Hodge scored three goals with two assists while five other Troubadours added multi-goal performances, leading St. Francis to a dominating 18-1 win over Rio Americano in the varsity opener of a non-league girls lacrosse doubleheader Wednesday afternoon.

The Troubies win their third straight, improving to 5-2 for the season. St. Francis junior varsity also picked up a 3-1 to move to 2-5 overall.

Karly Okamoto, Olivia Hamm, Elizabeth Barger, Jane Tattersall and Keira Miles each netted two goals, with Okamoto tacking on another four assists in the process. Sophomore Sara Ellis scooped up five draw controls, with Miles (4) and Tattersall (3). In fact, the Troubies won 17 of the 21 draws, with the remaining four going to Rio's Ella Jones.

St. Francis held an 11-0 lead at halftime and ran up its lead to 12 unanswered before Jones finally put the Raiders on the board in the 29th minute. Hodge later completed her hat trick to extend the lead to 14-0 with 4:21 left in the third. The Troubies largely shut down the offense for the last 15 minutes but did let defensive players get in on the scoring action: Jade Abalateo, May Conlin, Brianna McGahan and Barger.

At the midpoint of the regular season, Tattersall leads the Troubies with 19 goals, with Miles and Hodge tied for second with 17 apiece. Okamoto now has 14 assists, more than twice that of any other teammate. Tattersall's three draw controls raised her season total to 20, now one ahead of Hodge. Freshman goalkeeper Jayel Miller has 37 saves against 39 goals in seven games.

The Troubie JV squad followed in a rare varsity-first doubleheader, with sophomore Nevaeh Gavino posting her first career hat trick to account for all three goals in the 3-1 victory. Gavino also had team highs of three draw controls and two interceptions. Freshman Lizzie David won seven ground balls while snaring a Rio pass along the way.

Each St. Francis teams goes on a midseason hiatus around the school's spring break, with varsity coming back to play on April 5 at Terra Linda in San Rafael. The jayvees wait even longer, taking the entire two weeks off before playing in the April 10 Delta League home doubleheader with Davis.
