Tattersall, Hodge score 70th goals as LAX season ends in Danville

DANVILLE, Calif. – Junior midfielder Jane Tattersall scored five goals while fellow 11th-grader Brynley Hodge added two more with five draw controls, wrapping up the 2023 St. Francis season in a 10-9 loss to host Monte Vista in the first round of the North Coast Section Division I girls' lacrosse tournament Tuesday.

The Troubadours finish their season with an 11-6 overall record. The Mustangs, ranked eighth in the NCS, improve to 13-4 for the year.

Tuesday's scoring output raises the season goals total for both Tattersall and Hodge to 70. This shattered the previous SF record of 58, set last year by current Delaware State freshman Zahra Smith. In fact, Hodge and Smith created a new first in 2022 by becoming the first Troubie teammates to break the 50-goal plateau in the same year.

Tattersall scored St. Francis' first three goals of the game, with the hat trick equalizing the contest at 3-3 in the 12th minute. April Bryant hit back-to-back for MV to restore her team's lead to 5-3, but the Troubies responded with three unanswered: Karly Okamoto in the 15th minute, Elizabeth Barger in the 18th, and Tattersall's go-ahead with 2:10 left in the first half. Still, the Mustangs countered with two goals in the final two minutes to take a 7-6 halftime lead.

Wire completed her hat trick in the 32nd to extend the MV lead to 8-6, but SF again rallied. Hodge scored on the next possession and Tattersall hit the equalizer for her fifth tally with 12:58 left. Wire later responded with goals in the 41st and 47th minutes to bring the Mustangs up by two, 10-8. She finished with five total, with Bryant adding a hat trick of her own.

Hodge cut the deficit to a single goal with 36 seconds remaining, giving the Troubies one last chance to win the draw and force an overtime. Instead, Mustang senior Cassie Sherry earned the final control. She scampered across her team's offensive restraining line until the game clock expired.

The playoff opener marked the career finales for seniors Abby Gillum, Louise Morr, Lauren Morr and Hayley Labia, the latter of whom notched five saves in the goalie circle.

Okamoto added one more assist to her total, extending her school season record to 52 and putting her career sum at exactly 100. She and Hodge also finish the 2023 season with 85 total points, tied for second in program history behind Tattersall's 95. Finally, Hodge won a team-high five draw controls to raise her season total to 78, sixth all-time. Zia Smith picked up another two DCs to close her season at 35, tying her with Meg Anderson (2014) with the second-highest total by a sophomore.

The 2023 season also marked the fifth straight year that St. Francis qualified for the NCS postseason (no such playoffs were held in 2020 or 2021).
