SACRAMENTO, Calif. – St. Francis has earned the No. 11 seed and will face sixth-seeded Monte Vista in the North Coast Section Division I girls' lacrosse tournament, the CIF announced Sunday. First draw is 5 p.m. in Danville.
The Troubadours, which finished third in the Delta League and fourth in the Sierra Foothill/Delta tournament, enter the playoffs with an 11-5 overall record. The Mustangs placed third in the East Bay Athletic League and hold an 11-4 season record.
St. Francis owns arguably the most potent 1-2 scoring punch in school history in juniors Brynley Hodge and Jane Tattersall, each of whom surpassed Zahra Smith's old season program record of 58 goals during the SFL/Delta tourney. Hodge enters Tuesday's game with 68 goals, and holds the distinction of being the first Troubie to record two 50-goal seasons. Tattersall, a transfer from Granite Bay, has netted 65 despite having missed a game.
Add to that mix sophomore Karly Okamoto, who broke her own school record for assists. She has 99 in her young career: 48 in 2022 plus another 51 this year. The trio of Tattersall (90), Hodge (83) and Okamoto (83) now occupy the top three slots in the SF annals for points in a season. Troubie lacrosse records date back to 2008.
St. Francis features four seniors: Abby Gillum, Louise Morr, Lauren Morr and Hayley Labia. Gillum, a defender turned low attacker in 2023, will play collegiate ball at DePauw next fall.
Monte Vista's offense features the high-scoring trio of April Bryant (43 goals, 14 assists for 57 points), Kathryn Roskovensky (36-4-40) and Madeline Geernaert (31-32-63), with sophomore goalkeeper Ella Geernaert locking down the cage with just 76 goals allowed (5.6 GAA). The Mustangs are familiar with the Sacramento-area programs, having edged Davis (7-6) and Granite Bay (10-8) early in the 2023 season.
The Troubadours ordinarily compete in the Sac-Joaquin Section, but take part in the NCS postseason in lacrosse due to the availability of teams in Northern California. Six traditional CIF-SJS programs appear in the D-I bracket: St. Francis, Oak Ridge (No. 2), Davis (No. 7), Vista Del Lago (No. 10), Granite Bay (No. 12) and Folsom (No. 13).
Monte Vista won the NCS title in both 2009 and 2010. So loaded was that squad that five of its All-EBAL honorees went on to play Division I collegiate lacrosse: Lauren Goerz (Virginia), Paige Southmayd (Stanford), Melissa Trisko (Fresno State), Leah Tremblay-Adams (UC Davis) and Jenna Alberts (Detroit Mercy).
Tickets for all CIF-NCS postseason events are available on GoFan at gofan.co/app/school/CIFNCS.
