Vista pulls away late in Delta League LAX showdown

FOLSOM, Calif. – Junior Jane Tattersall netted a game-high five goals while freshman Keira Miles posted a go-ahead goal in the 33rd minute and the equalizer in the 40th, but Vista Del Lago finished with a run of five unanswered goals to defeat St. Francis, 16-11, in a Delta League girls' lacrosse matchup Wednesday night.

The Troubadours snap their winning streak at seven games, moving to 10-4 overall and 3-3 in Delta League play. The Eagles to 6-7 for the year and 3-2 in the league standings.

The contest featured ebbs and flows throughout: Vista held a 6-3 lead after 15 minutes of play, St. Francis fought back to a 6-6 tie thanks to two goals by Tattersall and one by Elizabeth Barger. Midfielders Hayden Crowley-Brunt and Lauren Hagel each scored in the final two minutes of the first half to boost the Eagles to an 8-6 edge at the break.

Then Tattersall scored two goals and assisted Miles at the 17:21 mark for a 3-0 start to the second half, putting SF back on top by a 9-8 margin. Eagle sophomore Shaye Aland assisted Crowley-Brunt in the 30th minute then scored a goal of her own to restore the Vista lead to 10-9, only to the have Troubie junior Brynley Hodge even the score at 10-10 less than 20 seconds after the next draw.

Junior Beja Gelerter scored on the next trip down to put Vista back up, 11-10, but Miles answered with the 11-11 equalizer with 10:49 on the game clock.

However, the Eagles dominated the draw for the remainder of the game, scoring four goals in the next 4:39 despite two saves by SF senior goalkeeper Hayley Labia. Two of those goals came in the wake of a yellow card against the Troubies, among three extra-player goals in the second half.

Barger won the draw after the 15-11 score to move the Troubies into their attacking third for the first time since Miles' goal. But Karly Okamoto had a shot blocked, and Hagel won the enusing scramble for the ground ball. The Eagles made a quick transition to offense, then largely killed the clock until Aland added an insurance goal on a crease roll in the final minute.

Hodge finisehd with two goals and had four draw controls, while junior Brianna McGahan her four of her team's seven caused turnovers on the defensive end.

The Troubie varsity fared better than its junior varsity sisters, which lost to the Eagles by a 17-2 final. Olivia Hamm and Sofia Rabinovitz each scored in the loss for St. Francis.

SF, Vista and front-runner Davis are aligned as part of an 'A' division in the conference, while Bella Vista and Rio Americano form the 'B' division, with interdivisional teams meeting on a home-and-home basis. The Eagles head west to take on the Blue Devils on Friday in a meeting that will decide the final Delta standings.

The Troubies return to action for the SFL/Delta tournament on Tuesday and Thursday. The site, opponent and game time each depends on Friday's Davis-Vista result.
