Troubies sweep T-Wolves in LAX doubleheader

RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. – Junior Brynley Hodge scored a game-high five goals while junior Jane Tattersall added four goals and sophomore Karly Okamoto totaled eight points as St. Francis breezed past Woodcreek, 17-2, in the varsity nightcap of a girls' lacrosse doubleheader at Mather Sports Complex Monday night.

The Troubadours improve to 5-3 for the season, kicking off a 12-day homestand through the end of the month. The SF junior varsity also won handily, 15-3, to extend its victorious streak to four.

Okamoto tallied five assists to go with a hat trick. Following her eight-assist performance at Bella Vista three days earlier, the Troubie attacker now has 29 dimes for the year. That ties her for second in the program's MaxPreps era, matching the 2019 total set by current UC Davis player Sophia Gorona. Okamoto shattered the school record with 48 assists last season.

Hodge enjoyed her fifth game with at least five goals this season, raising her season total to 36. She set a school record for a sophomore with 54 tallies a year ago. Hodge and Okamoto each completed hat tricks before halftime, boosting SF to a 12-2 lead at the break.

Tattersall now has five hat tricks in seven games played in her first season with St. Francis. She scored one of the more unusual goals of the game in the eight minute: the Granite Bay attempted to pass to Okamoto inside the eight, but the errant ball went through her teammate and past the Timberwolves' goalkeeper.

Elizabeth Barger followed Tattersall's "accident" with an assist to Hodge and a goal of her own, increasing the Troubies' opening run to eight unanswered. Woodcreek senior Hailey Lawson converted an eight-meter chance with 9:45 left before halftime to put her team on the board, then sophomore Addie Strong did the same five minutes later to account for their team's lone scoring.

Tattersall figured on four of the five SF goals in the second half. On an eight-meter opportunity in the 27th minute, Okamoto opted to pass to Tattersall rather than converting the shot. Tattersall then assisted Hodge on two quick-stick goals in the 29th and 31st minutes, extending the Troubies' lead to 15-2. She later set up Keira Miles for a goal with 12:44 left. St. Francis largely shut down its offense for the remainder, save for another successful free-position chance for senior Louise Morr in the 42nd minute.

Besides her scoring contributions, Hodge also led SF in draw controls (5) and ground balls (3).

In Monday's JV opener, Olivia Alvernaz and Gianna Erdmann each scored four goals to lead the Troubies to an 11-1 halftime lead and 15-3 final. Chloe Tanner added a hat trick, all in the first 21 minutes of play.

Erdmann netted two goals on crease rolls before the break, completed her hat trick on just such a play in the 29th, then made it four scores on a ground ball pickup in Woodcreek's defensive third. Alvernaz converted assists from Zoe Smith, Tanner and Lena Schnack while also converting a trip to the eight-meter arc.

For her part, Schnack finished with a goal and two assists for three total points, as did Jane Abalateo. Junior Emma Karamanoukian scored a pair of goals, the second of which came courtesy of a long outlet pass from defender Nevaeh Gavino in the 39th minute.

Both Troubie teams return to action on Wednesday with a non-league doubleheader against Rio Americano. First draws are the usual 5:30 for JV, 7 p.m. for varsity.
