Yadao wins JHS-SF Invite, hits All-America standards

RIO LINDA, Calif. – Troubadour junior Sinclair Yadao won the varsity 1-meter board with a score of 448.15, winning the Jesuit/St. Francis Invitational diving meet and qualifying for NISCA All-America status at Capital Divers Friday afternoon.

The invite meet is the first on the high school schedule to feature an 11-dive program, similar to the upcoming league, section and CIF state meets. However, all divers were allowed to perform the full complement of dives, with no eliminations after what would be the prelims and semifinals of a championship meet.

Sophomore Paige Vicente finished third in the varsity competition with a 372.40, while sophomore Maya Hamilton dominated the 11-person junior varsity event with a 312.65. Freshman Farah Fox tallied a 249.05 for sixth place, a score made even more impressive considering she had been out during the week (SF currently finishes its spring academic break).

Yadao fulfilled all of the nominating requirements for NISCA All-America honors in Friday's meet, most importantly a score of at least 375 with a minimum degree of difficulty of 13.0. The NISCA All-America list will be announced in June. Yadao will need to rank among the nation's top 100 to earn inclusion.

Yadao gained the most ground in Friday's win with her fourth dive, a 105C (forward 2.5 somersault tuck), scoring at least 7s from all five judges for a 52.80 bump. For reference, she placed second at the 2022 Sac-Joaquin Section championship with a score of 423.80, then went on to finish 13th at the state championship at 410.10. The winning 448.15 on Friday is her highest 11-dive total since last year's Delta League meet (476.60).

Vicente placed less than a point behind Davis' Violet Watts, who runnered up with a 373.15 total, with only a missed 5132D (forward 1.5 somersault, full twist free) in the 11th round making the difference. On the other hand, Vicente piled up scoring on two other 2.2 DD dives: a 403C in the second round and a 104C in the seventh, good for 47.30 and 42.90 bumps, respectively. For context, she placed fourth in the SJS frosh-soph competition last year with a 304.40, while her previous 11-dive best was the 319.85 she scored at the 2022 Delta League championship.

Hamilton continued her outstanding sophomore season with a strong Friday program. She took care of business in the first rounds with a 7.0-7.5-8.0 on a 101C and 7.0-bingo on a 103C for a 60.60 start, while closing out her day with her toughest dive of a 403C (inward 1.5 somersault tuck).  The 312.65 total represents a massive improvement over her 2022 league (274.60) and section (270.10) totals.

St. Francis returns to action on Wednesday for the Delta League championships, hosted at Rio Americano on Wednesday.
