CARMICHAEL, Calif. – Sophomore Mia Hill, junior Megan Gawlick and junior Gabriella Ching each won two varsity events, while Alexis DeAngelis, Gabriella McHugh and Milena Bonnici each captured two junior varsity races, leading St. Francis to a 141-30 win over Franklin in a season-opening Delta League swim meet at Jesuit High School Friday.
The Troubadours scored 128 points in the swim portion, then tacked on 13 points from the one-meter diving event, held at Capital Divers in Rio Linda.
Ching won both the 100-yard butterfly and breaststroke events, while Hill captured the 200 individual medley and the 100 free. Hill also took part in the winning 200 medley relay along with Isabelle Schmid, Bianca Ignacio and LK Holliday for a time of one minute, 56.28 seconds. She then led off the winning 400 free relay (3:53.38), joining Schmid, Ignacio and Gawlick. In turn, Gawlick won the 200 free (2:04.36) and 500 free (5:28.23).
Ching touched home in 1:07.32 to win the 100 fly, while her 1:13.45 in the 100 breast was nearly five full seconds ahead of teammate and runner-up Rachael Madden (1:18.14). Hill followed that medley relay win with a 2:16.98 in the IM, and added a 56.58 to capture the 100 free.
McHugh picked up JV wins in the two sprint free events: 28.64 in the 50 and 1:03.88 in the 100. Bonnici's double came in the 200 free (2:23.11) and 100 backstroke (1:14.18). She also took part in all three winning JV relays. DeAngelis captured both the 200 IM (2:29.69) and 100 breast (1:18.27).
One highlight came in that 500 freestyle, in which the JV and varsity races were combined into a single event. This put sisters Teaghan Brostrom and Piper Brostrom side-by-side for the first time in their swim careers. The two sisters finished 2-3 in the race behind Gawlick.
Franklin did not field any divers, so the Troubies competed only for finishes but not for official individual scores. Maya Hamilton, Jaiden Jackson and newcomer Farah Fox swept the top three places for a baker's dozen in the team scoring.
Both swimming and diving teams return to action at home on Wednesday against fellow area powerhouse Davis. The swim action begins at 3:30 p.m., while the divers will kick off at 4 p.m.
