SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Junior Sinclair Yadao won the 1-meter board with a total of 250.85 points, more than 56 points ahead of her nearest competitor, to lead St. Francis in the diving portion of a Delta League swimming and diving dual meet with Davis at Capital Divers Tuesday. The Troubies defeated the defending Delta League and Sac-Joaquin Section champions in the overall meet by a 102-84 total score.
Senior Maddy Ching and sophomore Erica Jaffe each won two individual events and took part in two first-place relays in the swimming side of the meet, held at Jesuit High School
Ching led a 1-2-3 St. Francis sweep in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 57.75 seconds, with Jordyn Larson (1:00.92) and Makenna Frederiksen (1:01.50) finishing the Troubie trifecta. This came minutes after the UC Davis-bound senior captured the 50 freestyle at 57.75.
Jaffe captured the 200 individual medley at 2:07.07, then added an event win the 100 backstroke by touching home in 57.17 seconds. Grace Mering finished second in each of those events to help the Troubie scoring punch. Jaffe also led off both of the winning 200 medley relay and 400 free relay, with Ching also taking part in each. The 200 medley relay went 1:48.03 to beat Davis by more than two full seconds, with Ava Chavez and LK Holliday swimming the breaststroke and freestyle legs. The 400 free relay compiled a 3:34.14 in the meet finale, well ahead of the Blue Devils' runner-up time of 3:40.97. Jaffe and Ching swam the first two segments, with Mering and Chavez finishing the job.
The 100 fly represented the only 1-2-3 St. Francis sweep among the varsity events, although Isabelle Schmid led a similar finish for the JV in the 200 free. She touched the final pad at 2:02.21, well ahead of teammates Piper Brostrom (2:15.99) and Abigail Benavidez (2:20.15). Schmid was a multiple event winner for the Troubie jayvees, as she took down the 100 back at 1:03.64.
The visiting Blue Devils won three individual varsity races, all behind their usual suspects: Sarah Bennetts edged Chavez in the 100 free (52.01) then dominated the 100 breast (1:03.88). Ava Portello led a 1-2-3 Davis finish in the 500 free with a 5:09.80 time. Portello also placing second in the 200 freestyle behind Chavez, matching the same order of finish at least year's CIF-SJS final back on May 7.
For reference to the prestige underscoring this dual meet, Davis has won 21 total Sac-Joaquin Section championships, and has finished either first or second in every section meet since 2010. St. Francis has five total SJS banners, and outdueled the Blue Devils for the 2010 and 2011 titles. Davis and St. Francis finished 1-2, respectively, at the section meet last May; and were second and tied for fifth at the state championship a week later.
St. Francis swimming takes a week off from competition before hosting Elk Grove on March 22. In the meantime, the Troubie divers will fill the bye week with a dual visit to St. Mary's on March 17.
