Troubies draw Huskies to open CIF-SJS playoffs

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – St. Francis, ranked No. 2 in the area by the website MaxPreps.com, has earned the No. 1 seed and will host No. 16-seeded Mountain House in the first round of the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division II tournament, the section office announced Friday afternoon.

St. Francis, co-champions of the Delta League at 10-0-2, enters the playoffs with a 15-0-4 overall mark. The Troubies had 12 shutouts (11 wins, one tie) for the season. The four ties took place against No. 1-ranked Davis (twice), No. 17 Ponderosa, and CCS No. 2 Archbishop Mitty, while SF has wins against MaxPreps Top 20 opponents such as No. 5 Franklin (twice), No. 12 Christian Brothers and No. 20 Vista Del Lago.

Mountain House tied for second with Ceres in the Western Athletic Conference, trailing only Beyer for the league title. The Huskies had no opponents in common with the Troubies in 2022-23. MH is led offensively by the 1-2 punch of sophomore Jayden Reynolds (16 goals, 5 assists) and junior Sofia Ramos (10 goals, 5 assists), who account for exactly half of the team's 52 goals this year.

Meanwhile, St. Francis' offense is more diverse, boasting eight players with double-digit points: Micaela Romo (11 goals, 6 assists for 28 points), Jaycee DeFazio (7-8-22), Caitlin Hafenstein (9-2-20), Tacori Abril (8-3-19), Mia Barsotti (4-11-19), Piper Sherburne (6-4-16), Yasmin Azar (5-3-13) and Maggie Koerwitz (4-3-11). Romo and DeFazio are the only seniors out of that group, and are headed to play NCAA Division I ball at Saint Mary's and Cal Poly, respectively.

The other top seeds in the Division II bracket include Capital Valley Conference-champion Woodcreek (12-0-1), Sierra Foothill League's third-place Del Oro (6-5-5) and the SFL's fourth-place Whitney (9-5-8). St. Francis is the only Delta League school in the D-II draw, as the league's three other qualifiers – Davis, Franklin and Pleasant Grove – are scattered throughout the D-I bracket.

Game time is 4 p.m. at Cristo Rey High School's Adamson Family Sports Complex. Tickets are available exclusively through the GoFan app and platform. A direct link will appear on the St. Francis landing page at https://gofan.co/app/school/CA8032 over the weekend.
