Sherburne's hat trick leads SF past Cordova

ROCKLIN, Calif. – Junior forward Piper Sherburne scored a hat trick and an assist in an afternoon win over Cordova, while junior midfielder Tacori Abril netted a goal in each end of a Friday doubleheader, as St. Francis varsity posted a tie and a victory on the first day of the Rocklin Invitational girls' soccer tournament.

The Troubadours played Ponderosa to a 1-1 draw in the morning contest, then handily defeated the Lancers by a 5-1 final in the afternoon action.

Abril scored SF's lone goal in the opener with Pondo, beating her defender on a 1-v-1 after collecting a feed from Mia Barsotti in the 21st minute. However, the Bruins managed to equalize with five minutes remaining in the game to salvage a tie.

Against Cordova, Sherburne contributed to every first-half goal as the Troubies crafted a 4-0 edge at the halftime break. She scored in the third, 17th and 24th minutes, plus her cross earned the assist for Abril's goal in the 14th. Appropriately, Abril assisted Sherburne on the goal at 16:41. Abril had the initial shot, then Sherburne won the second ball before scoring the putback. Maggie Koerwitz, SF varsity's lone sophomore, provided the dimes for Sherburne's first and third scores.

Caitlin Hafenstein hit the Troubies' fifth goal of the contest, converting a through ball from Jianna Reyes in the 51st. A goal from the Lancers' senior captain Gabriella Maduri spoiled the shutout bid for the Troubies in the 56th minute.

The SF varsity's appearance Rocklin Invite represented one third of the soccer program's action on Friday. The JV Gold team posted a Friday sweep against Vacaville's and Pleasant Grove's varsity teams at the Inderkum Invitational, while the JV Red lost to Del Campo in the JV portion of the Inderkum event.
