DeFazio leads Troubies in road shutout at CO

ELK GROVE, Calif. – Senior Jaycee DeFazio scored two goals in a 3-0 varsity win while Madeline Squaglia and Jada Dwyre matched that total in a 9-0 junior varsity drubbing as St. Francis swept a Delta League girls' soccer doubleheader at Cosumnes Oaks Friday night.

Meanwhile, the Troubadours' JV Red squad claimed a 4-1 comeback win at Folsom, with freshman Mia Nelson also posting a brace. In all, SF varsity remains unbeaten at 13-0-3 overall and 8-0-1 in Delta League play, JV Gold extends its win streak to 12 games in moving to 15-1 for the year; and JV Red scores its 10th win to improve to 10-3-2.

All three of St. Francis' varsity goals took place in the first half. DeFazio broke open the game when she and Tacori Abril advanced on the Wolfpack cage in the 10th minute. The Troubies then doubled their lead when Maggie Koerwitz headed in a Mia Barsotti corner kick in the 29th. Then with less than a minute left in the first half, DeFazio made good on Micaela Romo's cross for the third goal.

Ava Hawkinson and Isabella De La Cruz had one save each as St. Francis notched its ninth shutout win of the year, and the seventh in league contests.

Prior to the varsity win, JV Gold piled up seven goals in the second half in securing a 9-0 shutout. Squaglia broke open the game in the second minute on an assist from Alina Uriarte, while Camdyn Zucker made it 2-0 in the 39th. Despite CO's effort – or perhaps because of it – to crowd the box with defenders, Miley Blough delivered a corner kick straight to Zucker, who found an opening in the Wolfpack defense for the game's second goal.

Blough's dime ended up being her first of three in the contest. Dwyre scored both of her goals after the break: a putback in the 41st minute and a launch from the right side thanks to Carly Hall's pass in the 48th. Blough planted a goal of her own the 47th, right before, Dwyer's second goal. Then after the CO goalkeeper failed to corral a Blough cross into the box, Giuliana Del Guerra made it 6-0 with her tap-in of the loose ball.

Angelina Chavez scored the Troubies' seventh goal in the 60th, then Squaglia hit her second in the 63rd, somehow finding the back of the net from a seemingly impossible angle from the left end line. Olivia Hamm knocked in the final SF goal in the 65th before the team shut down any further attempts to score.

Meanwhile, more than 30 miles away at Folsom's Livermore Park, JV Red erased an early 1-0 hole with four unanswered goals. Holland Sperber hit the equalizer in the 23rd, then Nelson scored the go-ahead in the 33rd, giving the Troubies a 2-1 halftime edge. Sara Ellis added a third score in the 53rd, then Nelson finished her brace with an insurance goal in the 64th.

Friday marks Nelson's first multi-goal game of her Troubie career, while Sperber raised her team-leading goals total to 14.

St. Francis' JV Red returns to action on Monday in a home rematch against undefeated Oak Ridge at 3:30 p.m. Varsity and JV Gold then host Sheldon two days later at their regular Cristo Rey home field. Start times are 4 and 6 p.m., respectively.
