Jaffe wins four total titles as Troubies runner-up at league
ELK GROVE, Calif. – Junior Erica Jaffe led a 1-2-3 Troubadour sweep in the girls' 100-yard backstroke, added another dominating win in the 100 freestyle, then took part in both of her team's first-place relays for four total All-Delta League awards, helping St. Francis place second at the Delta League swimming championships held at the Elk Grove Aquatics Center Friday.

Davis reclaimed the girls' title with 575 points, with the Troubies in second with 520. Pleasant Grove was a distance third with 204 points, ahead of Cosumnes Oaks' 155. Franklin (98), Sheldon (78) and Elk Grove (74) followed in fifth through seventh, respectively.

Jaffe posted a winning time of 52.14 in the 100 freestyle, two seconds ahead of freshman teammate Lilla Kapinya for a 1-2 Trouble finish. The exacta later improved to a trifecta, with Jaffe (56.32), senior Grace Mering (56.72) and junior Isabelle Schmid (59.77) claiming the top three places in the backstroke. A 1-2-3 finish represented 53 total points toward the championship, with junior Lexie DeAngelis adding another 11 tallies with her eighth (1:03.85).

Friday's session opened with the 200 medley relay, with Mering, junior Mia Hill, Jaffe and Kapinya combining for a 1:45.93, almost six full seconds faster than Davis' 1:51.69. The Blue Devils pulled away to the win in the 200 free relay, thanks in large part to a 23.37-second anchor split by Ava Portello. However, the Troubies' 400 free relay reversed the roles, even with Portello's blazing 50.61 in the fourth leg for Davis. Jaffe led off with a 51.54 split, Schmid went 53.79 in the second quarter, Mering posted a 52.65, then Hill finished with a 52.37 to result in a 3:30.35.

St. Francis also picked up a huge scoring boost in the 200 individual medley, with Mering winning at 2:04.22, almost two full seconds ahead of Davis' Ella Ackerman. Marissa Recio took third (2:10.78), Hill in fourth (2:11.34) with freshman Landen Didriksen chipping in sixth-place points with her 2:16.72. With four in that final, the Troubies notched 61 points.

Another 56 points came from the 100 breaststroke, with Hill (1:07.64), Ella Ching (1:09.51), Makenna Frederiksen (1:09.78) and Didriksen (1:09.89) finishing in second, fifth, sixth and seventh places, respectively. Frederiksen was also the lone Troubie finalist in the 100 butterfly, touching home at 1:00.99 for fifth place and another 14 points.

The team scoring also included the 1-meter diving competition from Wednesday, with Sinclair Yadao (461.85), Maya Hamilton (333.00) and Paige Vicente (330.35) accounting for 51 points in the standings. Only seven divers competed in the varsity portion – three from St. Francis, four from Davis – meaning St. Francis actually would have picked up another 21 team points if freshmen Rose Buffleben and Lily Frei had been entered into the varsity competition on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Kapinya blazed her way to a 24.22 to capture the 50 free for yet another individual title. She was the lone Trouble freshman to win a varsity event Friday, and that win led a 45-point push in the scoring. Ashlyn Brock (25.49) and Ching (26.00) chipped in fifth- and eighth-place points.

All varsity event winners earn All-Delta League distinction for the year.

In the junior varsity half of the meet, St. Francis again took second to Davis by a 484-447 margin. Franklin (165), Pleasant Grove (165), Elk Grove (142) and Sheldon (56) followed in order, with Cosumnes Oaks not fielding any JV entrants. Milena Bonnici and Olivia Charles claimed the top two finishes in the 100 back at 1:08.28 and 1:09.51, respectively. Both also took part in the winning 200 medley relay (1:56.96), along with Mikayla Magri and Juliet Shah.

St. Francis returns to action in the Sac-Joaquin Section championships, also held at Elk Grove Aquatics Center on May 1 and 3. The Troubies won last year's Division II title for their sixth all-time banner and first since 2011. A win this year would mark the third time the program has won back-to-back (1997 and 1998, 2010 and 2011).

Full results will be added to this story later on Friday, but a link to the results is available on GoTroubies.com.
