CONCORD, Calif. – Junior Mia Hill edged Cougar freshman Reagan Fullerton for the 200-yard individual medley win by a margin of just four hundredths of a second, shortly after leading the Troubadours' 200 medley relay squad to a first-place time of one minute, 49.98 seconds; but Carondelet came away with a 187-132 win over St. Francis in a non-league dual swim meet at De La Salle High's Brother Jerome West Aquatic Center Friday.
The Troubie-Cougar dual represented the girls' half of the third-annual meeting between the all-girls and all-boys high schools from Sacramento and Concord. De La Salle hosted Jesuit for the boys' side of the meet, with the Marauders snaring a 187-138 victory.
Hill touched home in the 200 IM at 2:13.51 for one of the Troubies' three varsity event wins. Hill joined Grace Mering, Erica Jaffe and Isabelle Schmid for the 200 medley relay victory to kick off the meet, while Jaffe turned around to lead a 1-2 St. Francis exacta in the 100 backstroke. Jaffe finished at 58.30, with Mering in second with a 1:00.57 time. This is the first Troubie meet of the season for the junior Jaffe, a UCLA commit; and for Mering, a fall 2023 signee with San Diego State.
The foursome of Jaffe, Mering, Schmid and Hill nearly picked up another win in the meet finale. They compiled a 3:37.02 in the 400 freestyle relay, less than a tenth of a second behind the Cougar team of Fullerton, Elisabeth Butler, Siena Santos and Natalie Aiken.
Carondelet and St. Francis finished fifth and sixth at the CIF State Championship a year ago with totals of 123 and 117 points, respectively. The meet also has a personal connection for Troubie head coach Brian Nabeta, who swam with Cougar mentor Roque Santos on the 1989 Cal Bears swim team.
St. Francis has a week off from competition, returning to action in a Delta League double dual with Cosumnes Oaks and Sheldon on March 20. That meet takes place at Jesuit.
