MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. – Pitcher Hope Jenkins and third baseman Alex Garcia each hit solo homers, but a late power surge allowed Saint Francis of Mountain View to pull away from St. Francis of Sacramento, 8-2, in the first round of the CIF NorCal Division I Regional Tuesday afternoon.
The Lancers improve to 29-2 for the year while the Troubadours end their season at 26-5.
Jenkins blasted a solo shot to left in the top of the first, when Garcia went opposite over the right-center wall to equalize at 2-2 in the second. It marked the eighth homer of the year for the UConn-bound Jenkins, and the first for the sophomore Garcia.
However, that ended up as the last of the Troubadour scoring, as the host Lancers regained the lead on a Chloe Cummings solo blast in their fourth, then added two more scores in the fifth when Jessica Oakland sent a long shot onto the adjacent Ron Calcagno Stadium football field, then Brooke Deppiese extended the lead to 5-2 with an RBI double off the left-field wall. The Lancers pushed across three more in the sixth on a Claire Turner bomb to left.
Jazzy Basquez and Grace Jenkins also had hits for the Troubies, although senior first baseman Kayla Garber was robbed of one in the top of the sixth. She hit a hard shot off that deflected off the Saint Francis first baseman, but directly to a diving Deppiese at second, who leapt to her feet and finished the play. Basquez also opened the seventh with a shot to the right-center gap, only to see Cummings chase it down for the first out.
Kate Munnerlyn went the distance for the Lancers, allowing just the four hits and a walk. Hope Jenkins also had a complete game for her final outing as a Troubadour.
